Need help in rebutting why to get a PC over a console

Ok well here's what my friend says

I currently have the following config-
i5 760@4ghz
4gb ddr3 1600mhz
600w psu
GTX 560-ti
maximus III formula
1.5 TB hdd

The problem that I am facing is that I am not very rich and I am having to upgrade my pc every 2 years to play the latest games in decent settings. I am planning to buy a ps3. What do you guys have to say about this?

How could i rebut this?
Your rig really isn't too shoddy.

No way should you replace it with a PS3.

Consoles last what, 3 years? So therefore you'd spend as much on a new console as you would on an upgrade to your build.

Also, console games are soooooo much more expensive than PC games.

PC games are way more varied and graphically/content superior as a whole.

I genuinely don't think you'd make much of, if any, saving in the long run.

I was in need of a more specific answer in a very short period of time. As you can see I'm asking about a specific rig with potential upgrade paths, instead of just the whole overall choosing between a PC or console, because my friend already has the PC i listed in the first post. Try posting something helpful next time.

Firstly, that PC will pwn any current gen console on the market (by a fair margin)

Secondly, the PS3 and 360 are coming to the end of their life cycle (Xbox 720 rumoured for 2013 and PS4 possibly as early as Q4 next year) so what's the point in buying one when in 18 months it will be old tech and the new consoles will be coming out?

On this point, the beauty of PC is that it is constantly being developed for because it never changes. The hardware does, but the platform does not. With consoles, once the new version comes out, the old consoles are pretty much abandoned and you end up with no new games coming out on the sytem. Which then forces you to upgrade to the next console, which might be another $500 or $600 for the console alone, especially early in the consoles cycle. Let alone then paying an extra $10 on top of the PC price for the same game.

Not to mention that as Tigalione said, console games are more expensive. You also don't get awesome Steam sales on console (since no Steam obviously). PC's are also useful for things other than gaming and far more practical for the majority of people. Since most console owners also have PC/Laptop, isn't it more convinient to be able to game on your PC? Than have to switch between and console and PC when you want to go from work to play or vice versa?

In short, consoles are really not worth the money. Especially this late in the hardware cycle.

Plus, spending $100 a year to upgrade PC hardware, will still be cheaper than buying a console, especially when you consider that each game is usually $10+ more than the same game on PC. So if you buy 10 games a year or more, the PC upgrades have already paid for themselves because the games you are buying are cheaper and you are using those savings to upgrade the hardware. Plus, a $200 GPU in 2 years time will pwn an Xbox 720 or PS4. Especially with the new GPU architecture coming out

Yup,

OP's rig may not be the best. But you don't need the best to game. All you really need is a good GPU. Heck you don;t even need that-if you don't care about maxing out settings.

Gaming consoles represent awful value especially now, given pending upgrades to the lines...as well as the fact they are using GPUs 3 generations old. And when the console lines are updated they'll be farther behind. IIRC XBOX for example when it comes out, scuttlebutt has it that it will have a Radeon 4000-series GPUs.

Well, if your gonne get same graphic "qualities" as the xbox360/ps3 you have to pay a lot more. Now I cant talk for all countries, but goodluck getting a PC with same graphics as a xbox360 without paying twice as much.
Therefore I think its wrong to say keep the PC. In the end, consoles are still for the "poor" people.

You can't really say that, because a PC and a console are two totally different things. Consoles are for the less fortunate people yes, but only if they want something to game on. You can't do anything else with it. I live in South Africa, and for not that much more than a concoles price, including say three games or so, I can build a PC that will be able to at least play games (although not spectacular graphics) and you can still do so much more with it, PLUS upgrade it.

EDIT: Other than watching a movie and playing music.

Your rig is overkill if you just want to play games. thats not the PC markets fault.
