MacRumors points at a Financial Times report (subscription required) asserting that Apple has now officially surpassed Nokia to become the #1 smartphone maker globally. IDC Worldwide Mobile Phone Tracker had Nokia ship 24.2 million smartphones versus 18.7 million iPhones. A quarter later, however, iPhone sales have gone through the roof while sales of Nokia smartphones fell down the cliff as the world’s once leading mobile phone maker fights to regain influence. The financial paper explains:

Quote:
Shipments of Nokia smartphones declined by 34 per cent to 16.7m units, compared with the 20.3m iPhones shipped by Apple in its second quarter. Apple was already the biggest smartphone maker by revenue and profits, but the April-June period marked the first time it had surpassed Nokia in volume.

Not surprising really. Nokia's market has shriveled in the US since they refuse to release any decent phones here. They release all of their good stuff to Europe and Asia, but not here. Maybe if they gave Americans something more than the same candy-bar styled radio phone that they have been for the last 10 years they'd have a better shot.

The 3GS for $50 state-side was a good move for Apple. Not sure if they'll be able to do that with iPhone 4 when the next gen is released.

$50?! For how much per month?

The 3GS is still like the equivalent of $500 here!

I'm an android guy myself but for people that just want a simple phone that works then I'd recommend the iPhone but not at the prices they charge over here.

No it isn't. It's free on a £25/month contract now, the 8GB version at least.

I'm not surprised, whilst I'm sporting a Galaxy SII at the moment, I had a blast with my previous 3GS 16GB before this and I will definitely be looking at iPhones in the future when this is due for an upgrade. I don't really care what anyone says, both the iPhone and some top end Android phones are awesome, and you wouldn't be making a wrong choice either way.

The 3GS?

I got my Galaxy S for free on a £18/month contract, which is arguably better than the iPhone 4.

Notice I said state-side, as in the good ol' U.S. of A. 'Merica!

Only $50 cash up front got a lot of people into the iPhone game.

i know alot of people who has nokia phones (here in eu)..
they all have the "classic" chocolatebars with buttons. no fancy stuff. And the people i know with smartphones have iphones, or something with android(HTcs mostly but know a few with LG and samsung)

basically i think, nokia is aiming more at the "i dont want touch-screen"-market.. but i could be wrong ofcourse its all a matter of preference. I'm sure nokia will do something about it. They'll lose in the end if this keeps up!

Never understood how Nokia was at the top. Regular phones, sure, but smartphones? Their smartphones always use outdated technology and are overpriced compared to the competition. Unless they're counting those cheapo $50 ARMv5 phones.

Guess that's why Apple surpassed them. Forget using the latest hardware and creating new, innovative designs. We should all just use two year old hardware and put the rest into marketing.
