Can you run 2x2gb in dual channel and 2x4gb in dual channel in the same system? - Page 4

lol... ok so here is where I get confused.

If channel A_1 and A_2 is one entire channel while B_1 and B_2 are another, why then would I lose 4gb of dual channel ram?

If A_1 is populated with a 4GB stick, wouldn't it only matter what is in B_1? Not what is in A_2 or B_2? A communicates with B, not A-A so A-B is all that would matter is it not?

According to the manual, each channel would have exactly 6gb of ram, so would I not have access to all 12gb of ram in dual channel mode?

A_1 and B_1 would have 8GB while A_2 and B_2 would have 4GB.

If it worked the way you're stating then I would only have access to 4GB of dual channel memory since each channel has a 2GB stick in it.

I'm not saying you're wrong, I'm just saying why I'm having a hard time grasping it smile.gif

(ignore circles)

In this example, that board is set up the same as yours. Ill use Channel A and Channel B, and slot 1 and slot 2 for each channel.

Ok, I made a mistake on the channels/slots, which is probably why Im confusing you. Slots 1 and 2 are on channel A. Slots 3 and 4 are on channel B. You want to place DIMMs in slots 1 and 3 to enable dual channel mode, so that there is a stick in each channel (at least). The the amount of RAM in slot 1+2 should match that of slot 3+4, with ideally 1 matching 3 and 2 matching 4.

I read somewhere that older AMD systems would be slots 1 and 3 for channel A and 2 and 4 would be channel B, which is where I think I started to explain things backwards.

If you have RAM with different speeds, it will run at the speed of the slowest RAM and widest timings. It cannot run RAM at different speeds. If you bought 1333 MHz RAM and 7500 MHz RAM, they would ALL run at 1333 MHz until you specify otherwise. If you change it in BIOS, you change it for ALL RAM slots.

And programs dont use up certain channels. That is done by the memory controller. The programs just says "I need this information placed on RAM/taken from RAM" and the memory controller deals with the RAM. You dont need to run more than one program to use dual channel mode as that would imply.
Am I misunderstanding or are you saying that if you have 2 sticks they should go in 2 different color slots?

No they go in the same color slots, blue with blue, black with black.

its simple matching ram goes in the same color slots or the same number iv ran differt kits of ram sence ddr1 days and it always works aslong as you keep them matched in the same channel.

No. The first 2 slots are the same channel. The second 2 are another channel. But you want to place your first 2 sticks in the same slot of each channel (A1+B1 or A2+B2). In that picture you would want to put them in slot 1 and 3, or slot 2 and 4 (same color of the number I drew, preferably both red but both green can work too if something in the way of slot 1).

Sort of. Many configurations may or may not work. 4/0/2/2 might work. It depends on the motherboard, and the memory controller more specifically really. Not a lot of people try these odd configurations (I have only tried 1/512/1/512 on a much older intel system, that worked) so its harder to get an answer. People usually buy RAM in pairs so a X/Y/X/Y is the most common setup where not all sticks are the same. Ideally you want to have all sticks the same as that is the most stable.

Long answer short, your 4/2/4/2 will work, and according to your mobos manual it should run all 12 GB in dual channel mode since channel A = channel B amount.

Hey Balla, click the button.

Stick 4GB in A_1 and A_2

Stick 2GB in B_1 and B_2

Done. 12GB all running in Dual Channel.

Yes or No? No more technical jargon!
