Need Help Looking for Cheap Receivers

Thread Starter

This:

Yamaha RX-V371BL 5.1-Channel Audio/Video Receiver = 229.99

vs

Yamaha YMC-500BL NeoHD Media Controller/AV Receiver = 99.99

...
..
.

We only plan to use a PS3, A PC (HDMI), a DVD and a PSP for the receiver so far..

I saw a optical out for TV for the 229.99 model but none from the 99.99 model.

Does that mean we can't output regular TV sounds with the 99.99 model (weird that it has optical out though).

Need help please.

Before suggesting any more expensive models, we really don't have the budget for it.. I am not even sure if my parents are even willing to pay for the 229.99 USD model.

Also, we are actually happy with a 6-7 year old 2.1 computer sound system (Boston brand) with its sound so were are assuming that even with the 99.99 model, it would be on par or at least a decent step up from our old pc speakers.

My step dad really really really wants to use those 5-6 year old speakers that have "black" and "red clips" behind each speaker.

I don't think either has an optical output. What kind of audio outputs does your TV have? Also, you might be able to get your TV's audio to the receiver through the ARC feature of HDMI, if your TV and receiver support it.

Also, Walmart has the receiver I have on sale for $150. It's served me well.

Ah crap.. I knew that ARC is something i'd need.

Then WTH? What receiver should we be getting on a budget?

Our TV has

x2 Component
x2 Composite
x3 HDMI inputs

x1 VGA/PC
x1 PC audio in (3.5mm)

x1 3.5mm Headphone jack..

Damn... So how do we output TV cable sound to the receiver and then, to the speakers connected to that receiver?

Some 1000$$$ receiver?!

From those specs you gave, it looks like you'd have to use the 3.5mm output, perhaps splitting it to a RCA connection. Are you sure that's the only output?
No no, you just need a simple receiver. You could go from cable box - receiver - hdmi out - TV.

If you get that receiver, you'd hook up the fronts using speaker cables to the receiver, the subwoofer to the receiver using a 3.5mm cable to the output labeled "sub-woofer", the cable box to the receiver (probably using HDMI), and then receiver to TV using the HDMI out. Here's a picture of the back:

EDIT: I'm a little foggy on this, but you may also have to attach an audio output from the cable box to the receiver as well?

Can't I just use the HDTV's (47LK520) Optical Out and into the YMC-500BL's Optical In? Wouldn't that output the Cable TV's sound?

Do I really need a cable box?

So the TV does have an optical output? Then, yes, you can just hook that to the receiver.

Will that output the Cable TV's sound to the speakers that are connected to the receiver?

(just making sure)

It should. You might need to set something in your tv's menu like AUDIO OUT: OPTICAL or whatever. I dunno since I've never bothered to do something like that...I just connect it all to the receiver

I see.. Hmm.. how likely is it that our LG 47LK520 has a feature like that? (change audio out).

I can't seem to see any when I use the HDTV's Menu.. or such option would only pop up once the TV detects a connection in its optical out?

Hmm..
