Upgraded from 6400+ to Phenom II 945

Funds have been tight and I wanted to put a bit more power on this old mobo. I was expecting a difference in frame rates but some of my multi core games have really gotten much much better! Bad Company 2 has seen the biggest difference. The new cpu has made a big difference. My 6400+ idled at about 43-45c. I re-used the cooler off it since it was made much better with some Antec Nano 6 compound and my 945 idles at 25-27c. I had planned on giving this system to my lady so she could game with me and building a Sandy Bridge system but I may get a AM3+ board with a 955 and go that route till Bulldozer comes out. Hmmm....

Wow, an older stock cooler keeps your new Phenom that cool? That's really surprising. My stock cooler kept my 940 toasty when I first got it. Hell not even a Zalman 9700 could keep it tamed. I had to get an HDT cooler in push/pull to lower idle/load temps.

It sure does. After playing bad company 2 I checked my temps and they never got over 46c while gaming. I am really impressed with it.

Is this the C2 or C3 rev 945?

Also as the 6400+ was I think 125W TDP it came with the same heatpipes stock cooler that cools most 125W Phenom II quads today. The board can handle 125W duals, but not quads.

C3 945s seem to be good for 4ghz+ though im not sure if you could get there with all ram slots populated.
my 945 will do 4ghz stable with 2 ram slots filled on the stock cooler,so its worth a shot for the free performance gain.the 955/65 will not do a great deal more, especially when you consider the performance gain/money spent.

Its a c3 chip. I do not plan on overclocking it right now so I'm not worried about that. The cooler that came with the 945 was horrible too say the least. Yes the 6400+ runs pretty f'in hot cause its the old Windsor core and 125w tdp.
