Same. Guitar Hero II was great because it was more polished than GHI and it was still new, and had good songs (Buckethead!). GHIII was good. It felt better than II and had good songs still. After that it felt like the same thing over and over with the songs getting more and more boring to play. I liked the Metallica game because I found most of the setlist fun to play. There were a few songs from each of the later games I liked, such as Blue Oyster Cult, Dire Straits, CCR, Rush, etc but I would have MUCH rather paid 1/4 the price to just DL those songs that I wanted and leave all the other crap out, because they felt exactly the same after III (lol @ campaign mode on WoR, that was horrible).

I know I'm banging on about it, but this is the thing with Rock Band 3, it's RRP has been lowered to around £20, and you can pick it up for a tenner in a lot of places. Then you have a library of over 3000 DLC songs to pick from (well, next week it'll pass 3k) - you choose what you want. The on disk songs are basically just a bonus. And you can naturally use all of the old equipment to play with (although the new equipment can do some cool stuff like pro modes). This is exactly what I mean about Harmonix getting the business model right in exactly the way GH got it wrong.

Exactly why GH:M was crap, Metallica fans (Like me) loved it but everyone else would have been alienated by it.

Instead you got like 2-3 games a year that were geared towards very specific markets and preferences that no one bought, like Metallica, Aerosmith, Van Halen, Smash Hits, Guitar Hero 5, Warriors of Rock, etc, etc...

Rock Band made the same mistake with the Beatles and Green Day and Lego Rock Band, and 1 and 2.

All of those came out within 3-4 years of each other and people got bored of it very fast. The only reason I bought Warriors of Rock was because 2112 was on it.
Having the band specific titles works if the band is popular, for example a Rock Band Megadeth would be a bad idea as much as I'd love it, but Beatles Rock Band worked fairly well.

For the most part I agree though.

QFT, and like I said before if Kotick doesn't realize it was competition and not another Activision title that did it then I really foresee BF3/BF4 taking out CoD really fast.

I play a guitar.... You know, six strings, nickel wound, made of wood? I know too many actual guitarists who bashed Guitar Hero so hard that the developers herd it. Seriously, I don't understand why a single band would actually appreciate the game. For all the time wasted playing the lot of you (that played) could have learned a real instrument.

Yes, the game sickens me.

[edit] I guess I shouldn't JUST troll, so I'll put in my 2c. Any game based off an instrument is doomed to fail.

As a guitarist in a metal band, I love how Guitar Hero is getting people into music that isn't normally their cup of tea, plus it takes about a month or two of play some of the nearly hardest songs on expert, compared to easily 2-3 years of playing real guitar to learn those songs.

Do you have any idea how many bands and musical directions I was introduced to thanks to Guitar Hero? I wouldn't have bought half the albums I have if it wasn't for those games.

That and the point of a video game is to "pretend." Not everyone had hours a day for years to dedicate to learning an instrument, they want to be able to just pick up a game, rock out for a minute with friends, then go back to the OTHER things they are good at that have to do with real life.

I never agreed with this outlook of the game at all.

And instead of playing that FPS you like, you could go out and train in firing real firearms, but guess what, that probably won't be as fun or easy to do. People play Rock Band because it's fun. I play it a lot with my flatmates at uni, and it's enjoyable because anyone can pick it up and start playing, you don't need experience, you can jump in, have a laugh, and listen to some good music.

Rock Band is great for bands too - songs getting released on Rock Band sell better, it advertises their music, and people who would never have been fans start playing songs and enjoying that music. A lot of bands (including The Who) are big supporters of Rock Band - that should tell you something in itself.

Hell, even if you want to tell yourself that it's only worthwhile to learn a real instrument - Rock Band can do that. Pick up a Fender Squier Stratocaster for Rock Band, I have one, it's a real fender guitar, and you can play songs on Rock Band in pro mode. When you get to expert difficulty in pro mode, if you unplug, plug it into an amp, you will be playing the song. Pro Keys will do the same thing with keyboard, and Pro Drums comes pretty close to the real thing, and will at the very least teach you full limb separation.

It's been a common story from people who tutor music, since guitar hero and rock band came out, they have had far more business. People drum in Rock Band and then go out and pick up a real drumkit, people play the plastic Guitar and pick up a real one.

The idea that Rock Band is an alternative to playing a real instrument is a joke - it can be a step towards it, just good fun, or it can actually be playing a real instrument.

Go and actually play Rock Band with a group of friends, and stop trying to hate it. I am a programmer, but I don't hate Uplink - sure, it's a completely innacurate representation of hacking, but it's fun. That's the point. Rock Band is really good fun, and if you think having fun is worthless because it's not learning a real skill? That's a sad viewpoint.

Activision should be happy with the amount of recycling they have been doing with their games lately. It was only a matter of time before the GH era ends. What goes around comes around.

You are not the first I have heard this from. Since when does a video game have to mimmick reality when it's suppose to provide entertainment?

This kind of reminds me the folks who go after the Corsair HXX cooler owners..."You either have to do all the hard work or don't do it at all!"
