Solution for internet

Thread Starter
Ok I finally got my new rig built and have installed windows 7 x64. With my old computer I used to connect to the internet with a wireless PCI adapter. My new rig has no PCI slots. So thats out of the question. I have got the two computers side by side but as I don't have a crossover cable I can't connect using the wireless from this PC. I have another router here, would there be someway of receiving the wireless from my other router and just connecting it straight to my new rig with an ethernet cable?

Depending on the model of the extra router that you have, you can flash the firmware on it to DD-WRT or Tomato, and use that as a wireless bridge device.

Its a Vodafone router. Hold on I'll just get it. Where do you get this firmware or is there a guide somewhere?

Since you cannot get wired ethernet, what about just getting a PCI-E or USB wireless receiver?

you can go on http://www.dd-wrt.com/site/index and see if your router is supported by the firmware. Most likely it wont be supported by the software because it's a ISP issued router.

If the case that it isnt supported, you can get a USB wireless adapter and plug it into a free USB port on your computer, or see the advice from dhenzjhen or christian_piper.

You likely do not need a crossover cable as most modern NICs are capable of auto MDI/MDIX (even this laptop I am typing on from 2006 can do this).

Therefore, you may be able to bridge your PC with just using a patch cable.
