AMD Bulldozer = Zambezi or Komodo?

Thread Starter
Hi all im new to OCN & the overclocking scene (thus, don't know anything about it). ive put up with extremely old dinosaurs over the years, like up until 3 month ago i was using a compaq d500 (small form factor) = P4 @ 2ghz/768mb ddr & now a hp compaq dx2300 = core 2 duo E4400 @ 2ghz/2 gb ddr2, both running windows 7. so now i'm throwing the towel i'm out to create a monster to use for gaming (for which ive never had decent for that). so my question is "when" bulldozer is released shall go for FX8150 or hold out for the komodo, cos over the years the "FX" series has been the "Flagship" version of the cpu & now apu's are comming, i'm not so sure. will komodo be better then FX 8150? please help, cos this will be my first build/rig

Future Rig Specs:

case: corsair special ed graphite white 600t series

mobo:

asus crosshair v

cpu: 1090t (black edition)/soon to be bulldozer

By the time AMD Komodo (Bulldozer+GPU) comes out, Bulldozer Enhanced will most likely be released around that time as well. So AMDs APUs will most likely be one processor and graphics generation behind. (AMDs current APUs are based on Athlon II + 5000 series, just as an example).

I'd wait a month or two for Bulldozer to come out. There's no need to wait for BDE to come out, since that will be next year and even then we don't know when. BDE will most definately work on current AM3+ motherboards available now, so I'd suggest making a Bulldozer build, but use a cheap Phenom II processor instead and then upgrade to Bulldozer when it comes out in a month or two. Or if you don't want to take a gamble on how Bulldozer will perform, just build an Intel Sandy Bridge computer tongue.gif

You are mistaken. Komodo will be Bulldozer Enhanced cpu not apu.

@ nub, thanks thanks confirmed my hunch.
@ MrAlex, unfortunatly i cant afford a sandy bridge rig & more to the point then have to add more costs to upgrade to ivy bridge. so this aint viable for me. though i was pondering for a while on the 2600k anyhow. but now is pointless cos of ivy bridge!

I would also like to point out that MrAlex was mistaken when he said Komodo will "definitely" work on AM3+.

Komodo will require a new socket currently nicknamed "FMx", this is partly due to the extra pins required to have a triple channel memory system.

Actually we are both mistaken. Komodo will be Bulldozer Enhanced APU.

Fair enough.

I would like to point out that YOU misread, I said Bulldozer Enhanced would work on AM3+. That's the way AMD have worked since AM2, so don't go around pointing fingers.

lol mate you really have no idea what you are talking about. The image you just gave us just reinforced what nub said. Let me reiterate this for you in case you didnt get it the first time.

Komodo is a CPU rather than APU and that DirectX 11 graphics is just a part of the platform and not inside the CPU. the part where your diagram says "komodo" CPU, is a big give off but im guessing you missed that part.

I dont know when you will get this through your head but but "Komodo" is a subset of "Bulldozer Enhanced", which also includes Trinity and Krishna which we dont really care about. I dont know why you think this but there's not confirmation whether Bulldozer Enhanced will work on AM3+, it's really irrlevant what happened with Socket AM2,AM3,AM3+ they were backwards compatible because they had the same K10 micro-architecture and those 3 sockets were more like revisions, didn't change much between them 3.

And as i said beofre Komodo will require more pins due to the triple-channel memory so it's highly unlikely it will work with AM3+

2012detailsfrombittech.jpg

As you can see here Bulldozer Enhanced (Komodo, Trinity) will have FMx infrastructure, although there is a possibility of Trinity being able to work on AM3+, nobody knows for sure. Which was why i was surprised to see you say it will "DEFINITELY" work with AM3+.

i would appreciate if you dont go posting stuff for other people if you dont know what you are talking about. i know you are trying to help but please do some research first instead of acting like a 10year old to someone for correcting your mistakes

Zambezi uses the "Bulldozer" Module and is on the AM3+ infrastructure(Q3 2011)
Komodo uses the "Enhanced Bulldozer" Module and is on the FMx infrastructure(Q3 2012)
Trinity uses the "Bulldozer" Module and the "Northern Island" GPU Architecture and is on the FMx infrastructure(Q1-Q2 2012)
