Is This Even Worth It?

Thread Starter
Hey guys I was wondering if it was even worth getting an ATI Radeon 5870 with my current rig (considering the bottleneck issue).

Mobo: M3A32-MVP Deluxe
Processor: AMD Athlon 64 x2 5200+ Dual Core (overclocked to 2.97 GHz)
RAM: 4x1GB PC2-6400 (800 mhz)
GPU: evga NVIDIA GeForce 9600 GT (overclocked to 740/1835/1000)

This guy has the same mobo as I do and much better hardware and even he has bottleneck problems!

http://forums.amd.com/game/messagevi...hreadid=123242

So is there no point in me getting an ATI Radeon 5870 since it will be bottlenecked so much?

Sorry if this is a stupid question, I'm a noob.

Thanks,
AuTra

i would've put the money upgrading everything else.

And do the GPU last, as you know your system is a little bit outdated.. athlon x64

Yea... My system is quite old. I forgot to mention that it's my older brother who has the ATI Radeon 5870.

He's willing to swap GPUs with me since he doesn't play video games, but I don't want to go through all the trouble of swapping GPUs if I'll get a little performance boost.

You'd definitely get an increase in performance, but it would best be coupled with a new CPU+Mobo. An AM2/AM3 board will let you use your DDR2 with an AM3 CPU.

My recommendations:
Phenom II x3 720 $75 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16819103652
MSI 785GT-E63 $70 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16813130266
Total: $145

Extremely worth it.

Awesome thanks for the recommendations! 1 quick question though, how come the quadcore processors are more popular than the 6 core processors? Isn't 6 core better

6 core is only sometimes better in benching, and only really makes a difference for rendering, most games dont even utilize 2 cores yet,let alone 4

Because they're cheaper! Also, most people don't need 6 core so they just get a quad core and compared to quad cores, hexa cores are fairly recent so it's normal that quads are more frequent.

It's worth the trouble. The 5870 will perform much better than your current card even with that cpu.
