gettin out of nikon need camera oppinions.

so im looking to sell my nikon d5k and reach out to something a bit better, but im hitting a small wall.
ive been convinced to switch over to canon but i also was looking at sonys a55's and they are absolutely amazing in comparison. now for canon i was thinking of getting either a t2i, t3i, or a used 60d.

so heres my dilemma the sony a55 does 10 fps 1080p video and it can focus while doing video and shooting so thats really what made me excited when i saw it, but the thing that killed me is the lense options on b&h theres like 120 lens for that spefic mount where as canon has tons like 200+. Another thing i saw is that on camera labs they said the translucent mirror can block light which could cause worse photos seeing as your "permanently loosing light" which means slightly better images with an slr.

does anyone out there own the a55? should i just jump into it

The best thing to do is go to a store and try it out. See how it feels in your hands, how well the EVF responds when shooting, the image quality, etc.

Personally I would never buy one. It's kinda a small body and I hate EVFs... I had one on my old Fuji P&S and it was awful. However, people say that the A55 probably has the best EVF out there.

I think the 10 fps is a bit of a gimmick.

Personally, I'd get the used 60D (after already owning the D5000, I think you can probably move on from the Rebel line) and be perfectly content.

But on the other hand, don't dismiss the camera purely from a number of available lenses perspective. Don't forget that all of the old Minolta AF lenses work on Sony cameras, and there are some real gems out there!

10fps IS NOT A GIMMICK. It actually rocks and you see yourself using it much more than you think.
I have the A55 and I'm no pro but it can take an amazing shot, Ill upload something I literally took an hour ago with just a simple point and shoot and no settings being adjusted.

You do loose light with the translucent lens yes but I went into many in depth reviews before my buy and they all said that there is miniscule or no difference. #

Video recording is also ace and another reason I bought this, If you need more just ask ;D

EDIT:

This is true, Right after I got my camera I got a Minolta lens off of ebay and they are magnificent.

When i get done with my vacation im going to goto penn camera and check out and compare hands on i think thats when im going to make a serious decision but i am still leaning towards that sony. Since i live near summit point and i often autox i love/want a good video feature and the 10FPS only makes thing that much better. The only reason ill be more so pushed to the canon is for stronger portrait photos.

Also knowing that minolta lens' fit is good because i got a pentax with nice 50mm minolta and i love that lens, but the one thing that makes me concerned about the sony is that its not mainstream enough yet to really show its flaws.

rian can you post an image?

If you want true video, Canon has the best video quality in an SLR right now. If you want burst speed, then the Sony might be your thing. But the 60D is a lot sturdier than the Sony will be, and most of the Sony/Minolta lenses that are equivalent in class/price to their Canikon equivalents tend to be worse performers (case in point, the kit lenses from Canikon are very good, whereas the sony kits are middling).

looks good, the exposure jumps a bit but i guess if i were shooting raw that little bit wouldent matter.

also the thing about the 60d is not af while recording, or it might be just contrast focus while recording and thats suckie but yeah i agree canon does produce the best quality out of their sensors but from what i have been seeing the sony video quality is good and very color vibrant. Replicating the canon color scheme might not be hard just pulling a bit of saturation might give you the same style as canon

D5k was awful, but the D5100 is incredibly good. It uses the sensor from the D7k and even on auto settings it makes me feel like a pro.

At least look at it as an option, since you're familiar with Nikon already.

If you just hate Nikon, eh.

the d51k is good but its not that much of an upgrade and i figure im just going to get out of nikon. The biggest reason for this is the fact that the d7k cost well over 1k for the body alone. i figure if i sell my body and lens' i can make 700 to 850 for everything and i can purchase a higher end body like a a55 or 60d and then work on my lense collection from there. From the way im seeing it nikon makes amazing glass GREAT glass but the cameras kinda suck and lack features and updates. Canon seems to be good on their color spectrum and they pack their cameras with features like live histagrams and better focusing options for recording video. I think what makes me want to get rid of the d5k is the fact that they abandoned it really quickly, and i dont want to get the d7k or d5100 and them abandon that just as quick as i picked it up, I havent seen that with canon or its community. The other thing is i have been looking on craigslist localy and theres 2 a55s up for sale for 850 900 with flashes and lots of lenses so i could easily pick up a used one with everything i need.

Im working on my degree at college and i love photography and i want to be able to experience some videography, so i think a moderate upgrade is in line for me some time soon.
