gettin out of nikon need camera oppinions. - Page 2

if you want a dslr that does video you cant find anything better than canon right now. you can find nikons that come close or have better high ISO such as the d3s that goes up to 100K ISO but you will never shoot that high anyway and the picture is barely usable at that ISO coming from a professional standpoint anyway.

you want a performance camera the best bang for your buck will totally be the t3i or t2i or 60D as an upgrade i bet. you do not need 10fps unless you are shooting sports in which case most pro sports photographers arents even shooting 10 fps constantly all the time. although some do. 10 fps is over rated. my 7D does 8 and i barely use it unless shooting soccer sometimes. basketball i dont and tennis i barely shoot more than 3 a second.

The Sony uses a fixed pellicle-type mirror, which is good and bad depending on what you want to use it for.

I still have an old Canon EOS RT 35mm. I purchased it to use specifically for bird photography. Since it uses a pellicle mirror, the light passes through it while some is reflected up through the pentaprism and out the viewfinder. I thought this would be ideal for birds since there is no viewfinder blackout due to the mirror flipping up. However, in actual use, the loss of 2/3 to one stop of light meant I couldn't get the shutter speeds I needed for good images.

I did love the speed and the pretty much silent operation...just the whisper of the shutter curtains. Great for sitting in a blind trying not to startle your subject. Also great for long exposures where you didn't need to worry about vibration from the mirror.

Having said this, today you can overcome the loss of light with higher ISO's...but...I'm still a Canon fan.

Why? Because I love the ergonomics of their equipment...as well as a huge selection of lenses to choose from.

Also, as pointed out above, their equipment can handle rough use. I've used over 15 different bodies and probably 20-25 lenses both personally and professionally since my A-1 back around 1980 and have only lost one due to failure. Even that was only after falling lens-first about 5 feet onto a concrete garage floor. The lens was trashed but the EOS-1 body attached still worked.

When it's all said and done, you're the one that has to foot the bill and lug the equipment, so if I were you, I'd go to a camera shop where you can see all the cameras you're interested in. Take along some cards and do some test shots and roll some video. Look at them at home and decide which one will suit you better.

Just my 2c worth, hope it helps...

Rich

ive been looking at some comparisons and i see no difference besides the fact that the canons do not have autofocus while recording and i already know how obnoxious that is. as for 10fps that would be nice for rolling shots when shooting cars because you can only hang out a car for so long. im not made of money so the 60d is kinda a stretch for me so i would need to get a used one but i would consider the t2i or t3i that would leave me some money for another lens like a 35.

and lost your right i really cannot decide till i get down to the shop to test them both out. ill talk to them and see what they say maybe they will have a used 60d.

i might not be knowledgeable on photography but its all up to you and its really personal preference anyway. im not going to tell you whats better im just some guy on the internet that works with video cameras for a living. go with the sony if 10 fps is really the selling point for you, its more important to get the feature that you want then be stuck with a camera that you just kind of like rather than love

10 FPS in a tiny plastic body that has mediocre AF while shooting video. What a marketing. Stick with Nikon or go to Canon unless you want to get into one of the higher-end Sony bodies. Or do whatever, I don't know anything.

Man! Do I feel old........... I am still using my Nikon D200 SLR, and I still love it! It won't shoot video, but nothing about it gets in the way of great photos. It's what's behind it that does......

the sony a55 is a fine camera, but you need to know the limitation of sony bodies. First 10fps is only in JPG, and JPG conversion is the Achilles heel of sony. Second the translucent mirror in the a55 has some weird ghosting effects under certain conditions. 3rd sony does lack highend aps-c lenses (10-22, 17-55, etc) and our flash systems are limited (no ring flash, and a dated twin flash). 4th it has a EVF. finally there is suppose to be a new a77 coming soon.

If you can live with those faults then the a55 is a perfect camera. its AF is not any more inaccurate then a mid tier canon/nikon, its is built similarly too. And lenses shouldnt really be a problem since most people cant afford any of the really exotic stuff that canon/nikon has (aside form the apsc stuff i listed above) that sony/minolta doesnt.

Why do you want to switch from nikon? is there something specific about nikon you dont like?
