They are the same. Except a few minor things. Like the PCI-E slots. But the mounting and placement of the chipset coolers are the same. ENJOY!
I totally understand what your saying regarding the way the layout looks to the eye,yes its very similar.

But there must be a reason why the UD7 Rev1 and Rev2 full cover blocks are not cross compatible,UD7 Rev.2 EK-FC block was long waited for.

If theres slight differences even within the same model of board then whats to say that the block you are saying is compatible will actually make contact with all areas of board that require cooling?

If your infact correct then which Rev board are you saying its compatible with,Rev.1 UD5...or Rev.2 UD5? dont forget that even EK say that different cooling solutions must be used.

EDIT:

see HERE for underside of stock cooler and you will see its not just the NB/SB being cooled by the cooler but also the gigabyte sata2 controller being cooled,so if there is a slight difference in the placement of this chip between the X58-UD5 and the X58A-UD5 then you could end up with conact issues beteween components that need to be cooled, perhaps the very reason that EK state incompatability between Rev.1 and Rev.2 blocks?

Not worth the risk IMO.

EVEN MORE EDIT!!

Just taken another look and theres no doubt, totall incompatability with block kit you linked to and you can see why from the pics if you look at how the X58ud5 SB block wont fit around the X58Aud5' caps just off to the left side on GigaSata2 controller, please excuse my crappy, crappy excuse of an outline for SB block coverage

I am very anal regarding all of my hobbies. I spend a lot of $$ on my builds and I take great care of them. This was not due to pilot error!

Purchasing an EK nickel block from the last 1-2 years is basically rolling the dice, you're either lucky or very very sad like the GPU block above.
Thank you!

Sorry OP, I do want to hijack your thread.
