A strange model M2...

Given Ch_123 argued about backlit keyboards and cited a glowing model M as extreme case of blasphemy, i promised that sooner or later...

Today i received an M2 bought from Ascaii and I decided to recycle my old experiment on it (the qzerty layout was a partner in that decision )

Firstly I dismantled and cleaned the keyboard that was (obviously) a little dirty/yellowed

Then I used a set of recycled stickers, they are meant for black boards, but all in all the final effect on lit environment is not that bad.

Then I modded my USB rope light with an UV led, and although is impossible to get the idea in a foto (because the cellpone's image sensor is UV sensitive) the result is really nice in the dark environment: unlike the photos only the legends are visible to the naked eye.

BTW this is the final effect

This is how compare with a real backlight keyboard (105 blue leds @the maximum output v.s. a single UV led barely lit)

I must say that a 15€ board + 4$ spent on the stickers + 10 cent spent on the led are more than worth the result.

I'm curios to hear ch_123's comments... )

I think that was a pretty good idea to get it backlit with that method. Where is the UV LED located?

Also, I do like the look of the key legends, just because they're interesting.

I have my pc on the desk and the keyboard[s] on its sliding tray.

So I'm used to have a rope lamp connected to one of the front USB ports.

A single led has a narrow beam so this modded one is connected on the top ports, say 80cm from the KB surface, with a couple or more leds wit beams sligly diverging one can put the lamp nearer and have a more glowing legends, but this is more than enough for my likings, although is impossible to show it in a photo.

Looks better than expected indeed, my plan was to paint the keyboard in anthracite, as I always did to any beige component I had since the win 95 era, but now that anything is black, something beige feels not that bad.

Something like a black macbook: unusual = interesting...

Added a quick video.

Do you have the light fastened somewhere normally? I've been thinking about "frontlighting" my keyboard. I think I'm just going to get one of those LED strips with the sticky tape stuff on the back, and just slap that on the underside of my desk above the keyboard tray.

Yes, as I said, I have an usb light like this:

What you see on the video is a cigarette lighter with the white led replaced, just to show the variations depending on the light source position.
