GTX 480 SLI: Anybody have some benchmarks? - Page 3

It seems strange, I mean our cards shouldnt be suffering THIS badly should they? Im getting around 40fps average with everything set to ultra in game @ 1080p. Any thats with 2 460 Hawks at 811mhz.

Drivers must be terribly un-optimised for the various dx11 effects in the new engine

Edit: and crytec wonder why people dont want to pay for their terrible unoptimised games - that constantly crash

gf100's thermal limit is higher than gf110 so i think you are fine even though that's pretty hot. gf110 throttles at around 97C while gf100 chips throttle at around 110C

Here's a shot of my system which has essentually the same card combination and coolers as you have (sorry for the blurry photo):

I've got excellent temps. with these coolers on my 480's. Nothing I can run, including Furmark, makes the cards run that hot, they max. out in the high 70's., and the temperature spread between the top and bottom card doesn't exceed 4C, usually only a degree or two between them.
But, it required setting everything up properly to get these results.
First, I had to buy a CM HAF 932 case, which had a top-mount psu which allowed plenty of room for the bottom card to sit on a lower slot. This gives the cards enough space. As well, it has two 120mm fans below the bottom card. Finally, I mounted four 120mm fans on the door of the case, which really helps the temps., and reduced the temp. spread between the cards.

Here are a couple of pictures: http://www.flickr.com/photos/jklimek...7627127261703/

I'm not sure how safe that is... Do you think it's worth removing the fan shroud on the top GTX 480 so that the bottom GTX 480 isn't touching it?

EDIT: I've just run a few tests before I head off to bed:

Heaven 2.5 benchmarks:

1920x1200, No Anti-aliasing: Scores: ~2079
1920x1200, 4xAA: Scores: ~1712

GPU temps:
GPU1: 68C - 93C (max)
GPU2: 47C - 77C (max)

How does that look?

Those temps. are about 10-15C beyond my max. temps.
Removing the shroud can be beneficial on this cooler. Removing both of my shrouds lowered the temps. on both cards by about 2C.

Alone the card works perfect but when you stick it in sli you get this super high temp on the stuck card.
I agree with that 100%. The card spacing is a big factor, especially without adequate air flow from the door panel.

They're not going to blow up, but you can lower the temps. and the temp. spread on the cards. But don't go replacing the top cooler, the coolers you have on the AMPs are some of the best available.

If you don't want to change your case for the room, slot spacing, and bottom fan air flow as I did, then your choices are more limited. You would have to make sure you can get as much airflow from your door panel as possible. Unfortunately, with a 1200, you are limited to one 120mm fan.
So you would need to fit a good high-speed 120mm fan on the door panel.
Removing the shrouds would help to take advantage of the extra airflow.

But keep in mind that with the 1200 case, you are very limited to what you can do, with a case such as the 932, you could improve your gpu cooling by a lot.

I get 95fps in crysis 2 with all maxed settings at 1080p.

Thread Starter
I think the problem with my setup is the motherboard which is a Sabertooth P67.

It only has two 1x PCIe slots between the 16x/8x PCIe slots so the Zotac's three-slot cooler just barely fits with the two cards.

Even if I got a bigger case it wouldn't help because the motherboard has the 16x/8x PCIe slots too close together for this kind of setup.

However, since my tempts are "acceptable" I wonder if I buy a good 120mm side fan if I could get the temperatures into the "good" range. What would be a good suggestion on a 120mm side fan for me?

Ah, I didn't realize that the Sabertooth didn't have any more slot spacing available for the cards. A different case can't change that, then.

The 1200 is a good, big case with lots of airflow.

As for your door panel fan, the more airflow the better, up to a point, where the noise level isn't bearable.

What 120mm fans do you prefer? I see in your specs you have a TRUE Black, an excellent cooler, what fan(s) do you use on that? Some people like Yate Loons, I've never used them, but I have four Cooler Master R4's (about 60CFM ea.) in my door panel which provide good results and acceptable noise. If you can tolerate the noise, a higher rpm fan would have even more airflow, and then there are the 120mm x 38mm fans such as the Panaflow, which I've been using on my cpu cooler for a couple years, and has worked great. But I don't know if one would fit in your case as it is a bit wider than a regular 120mm x 25mm:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16835705002
There are higher cfm versions, but they would be noisier.

You'll get plenty of suggestions for other brands, such as Scythe. I just listed the fans I have used personally and liked.

I'd recommend returning the mobo and getting a real SLI one if you can.

Which would be the only solution to space the op's cards out properly.

Of course it does. But the op of this thread is having an issue with mounting two 480's that have custom coolers, because the Sabertooth doesn't have sufficient slot spacing to allow for two triple-slot coolers.

The op's 480's would ideally require more space between the cards than your 580 Lightning's do, if they are to be spaced apart sufficiently.

Here is the P67 Sabertooth, with two pci-e slots for the cards:
http://www.asus.com/Motherboards/Int...ABERTOOTH_P67/

Here is a P67 board that has more pci-e slots which would allow for variable spacing of the cards:
