Sandy Bridge 2600 Defective?

Thread Starter
Hi Overclockers,

WARNING : I am a noob! However, I have read most of the posts regarding the Sandy Bridge processor, and cannot find an answer to my current problem.

In a nutshell, I cannot get the i7 2600 above 4.0 Ghz. This is due to the fact that I cannot get the CPU Clock Ratio to match the BIOS settings. I go into the BIOS and set the clock ratio to 42x, and CPU Z reads the multiplier at 39x. It would appear the turbo setting is controlling the clock ratio, so I manually changed the turbo setting to 42 and still, the turbo setting is at 39 per core. I have also disengaged the turbo setting and played around with the clock ratio and bclck alone, and still cannot get the multiplier higher than 39x.

I ran several tests to check the multiplier value, using Easy Tune from Gigabyte, performing arithmetic tests using SiSoftware Sandra, and CPU Speed Pro.

I opened opened up the case to see if all cords were put into the correct sockets - yes they were. I then downloaded the most recent BIOS from Gigabyte. And then made sure I had ever single driver installed. Also, I reset the CMOS via mobo and still, nothing changed.

Is there some built in threshold for the i7 2600? Please note that it is not the 2600K.

Using the Gigabyte board GA-Z68X-UD3H-B3, the highest clock ratio possible is 42x. As mentioned in other posts, some users have been able to increase clock ratio at least to 45x. Why can't I?

And finally, how do I fix this problem so I can overclock to 4.5?

fyi, turbo is off, all the power saving and cpu performance decreasers are disabled. I literally followed every step to Sin's OC guide here, and still, I cannot get that darn overclock up. http://www.overclock.net/intel-gener...uide-p67a.html

Do you think I should return this cpu to Newegg? It seems like a lemon. At least based on all the other great reviews on this forum.

fyi...I primarily use my computers for financial market system trading development.

Thanks everyone for your help! Have to return this asap if there are problems!

You cannot adjust the multi past the stock turbo speed, on non k model chips, the only way youll get 4 ghz on that cpu, is to set the multi to max, then boost the FSB a few notches to achieve 4 ghz. Max FSB for daily use is 103 IMO at least.
I thought the multipliers were only unlocked on the 2600K? IIRC you can only OC the 2600 non-K by increasing the BCLK which OC's the whole system, not just the CPU.

I may be wrong, but if so, someone will be along shortly to point it out...

Hope this helps,

Rich

You bought a chip that is not a k series chip. It is not defective, if you want to overclocked your CPU you need to purchase a k series chip. You can change the bclk but most people can't keep the chip stable after 103.

This is me crying in the corner after hearing this news :* (

Funny how Intel doesn't include this info on their website. And for 15 dollars more :* (

@Capwn and Lost Hawaiian - thanks for the info! Based on your posts, it seems I have done everything to max out this processor. I can't think of anything else I can do via BIOS. I was thinking it was software or hardware related, but that doesn't seem to be the case according to your responses. Schnikes...I hope Newegg's return process isn't a pain in the a** from Canada. I bought from Newegg USA lol...wait, joke is on me :* (

Return for refund within: non-refundable
Return for replacement within: 30 days

Products that state "This item is covered by Newegg.com's CPU Replacement Only Return Policy", or items labeled as “Non-refundable” (or similar labeling) must be returned to Newegg within 30 days of the invoice date for this policy to apply. Products covered by this return policy may only be returned for a replacement of the same or equivalent item. “Return” constitutes receipt of the product by Newegg, and not the mere issuance of an RMA.

The following conditions are not acceptable for return, and will result in the merchandise being returned to you:
Any CPU that is physically damaged
Improper installation of CPU fans and/or improper clocking may cause CPUs to chip. CPUs that are chipped, burnt or have bent/broken pins are considered physically damaged and cannot be returned for refund or replacement. Physical damage includes (but is not limited to) improper handling and any other type of damage sustained by irregular use.
At least the 2600 is still a fast chip.

lol I read Newegg's return policy and was already thinking "I have got to get a sympathetic person on the phone, and maybe, just maybe they will let me upgrade". Otherwise, I'm hitting ebay, craigslist, and kajiji! Maybe tigerdirect.ca will buy it from me? Hmmm, but I threw away the packaging...hmmm lol

Thanks everyone for your replies! I can honestly say this is the best IT/overclock forum I have found and researched. Without you guys, I'd still be fiddling with settings, rebooting, and hoping and praying that somehow, just somehow the multiplier and cpu speed to 4.5........FAIL. Epic.

Couldn't you just return it and also include the money to the K edition? Or a bit more...
