I know that it won't overheat, but running at high temperatures all the time decreases the life expectancy and efficiency, no?

I think it will adjust fan speed depending on the powerdraw, not the heat. It might sound strange, but many of the newer PSU's works that way. So dont expect any fan noise under 50% load and high rew under 75% load.

It should be by the temperature sensor, at least in most models. At a certain ambient temperature and load, the internals will reach a certain temperature and the fan will spin up to a certain degree.

Otherwise, fan speed in a hot box and with room temperature ambients would be the same, but they're not:

If the Corsair AX850 and Seasonic X-650 in the tables above are any indication of your X-850, then yours is controlled by temperature as well.

I can see that Corsair will start using ambient temperature when DC load is > 50%. Until then, its only DC load based. Not all PSU's are that smart. Maybe it will answer you question.

As far as I know PSUs controls their fans by the wattage voltage they are serving, not by their temperatures.

Regardless of their explanation, it doesn't match the measured noise levels by SPCR, since the noise levels in the hotbox at 400W were considerably higher than the noise levels in ambient temps at 400W.
