[ABC] Australian Governments agree on R18+ games rating - Page 2

They are making some progress for us in AU.

Under the proposed guidelines games containing high-level violence will be restricted to adults, while games containing extreme violence will continue to be refused classification and banned from sale altogether.
So games can (and probably will) still be banned under the new plan if they have 'extreme' violence.

We’ve just spoken to Brendan O’Connor about today’s decision on R18+, and confirmed that he believes an R18+ rating will be put in place before the end of the year. He expressed relief that the issue now appears to be in the final stages of approval.
the rest here

This guy is the guy who is really pushing for it, hopefully he's right

What is the difference between high-level violence and extreme violence ?

How would something like Left 4 Dead be rated ? I mean, just look at the initial trailer of Left 4 Dead 2 that plays at the beginning every time you launch the game.

I was wondering when this would finally come about. I'm 17 so I guess it won't really affect me too much since I'm almost 18, but it's good to see that this MIGHT stop 12 year old kids from being able to play stuff like GTA or LFD, and with that I am a huge hypocrite

I see no problem with 12 year olds playing GTA. Heck, I was playing GTA 1 when I was 6. I've never taken what I played or saw in-game into real life.

The main issue with games like GTA is that most parents are too lazy to show an interest in gaming because they don't like it. Even if their kids do. So they are completely oblivious to what their kids are playing which means they don't sit there while their kids play (or play with them) and make sure they know what is and isn't acceptable etc.

Now my parents aren't perfect but they always came in to check what games I was playing and whether they were appropriate. I still remember asking to get Blood Omen 2 on the original Xbox for my 12th birthday and my dad researched what the game was and said no. Simple as that.

The only reason the R18+ debate got complicated was because of lazy parents who couldn't care less to show an interest in their kids lives and wanted the government to do their parenting job. Sadly its becomig more common. Its always someone elses fault or problem in modern society.

But I am glad to see the R18+ rating introduced. Should mean more games and choice for adults.

This thread reminded me of the time a few years ago (five maybe) where my cousin asked me to buy him DOA Xtreme Volleyball like it was some conspiracy to procure him some crack, booze, and a hooker and I lol'd and thought I would share.
