GPU Branding?

Thread Starter
I'm wondering how this works. Do brands make the electronics and everything and just use the chip made by nvidia? Or is the card all ready made and shipped to them, they brand it and make a heatsink?

Also what are the best brands I should look for as well as for OCing in gtx 460s company wise?

You mean reference cards?
All of them are made in the same factory. they just slap the brand on the card and they are done .
Thus going to the best warranty/ customer support is the best for reference cards.
And overclocking is up to the luck.
For the best overclocking results try to find non-reference cards or cards with custom coolers.

Some sub-vendors use the reference PCB, some make their own with the Nvidia chip. And imo, EVGA is best for Nvidia cards.

Nvidia/AMD just make the chip. They also design a "reference" PCB that vendors sometimes use. The "brands" or sub-vendors make there own PCBs and just use the chip from Nvidia/AMD.

Even with reference PCBs the sub-vendors still have to manufacturer the board themselves AFAIK.

okay so really overall all the work is Nvidia. Any brand will do just about the same. It just depends on warranties, customer service, heatsinks and what not? Also do they make a backplate cover for the 460?

Don't buy a EVGA reference GTX460, they are very overpriced and for similar and $10-30. Have a look at the Gainward/Palit/Gigabyte flavours of them as they are superior in every way.. Overclocking depends on the Chip and the Cooling. The latter, these cards have in spades.. The Gigabyte one will run coolest though.

I am sure you can find a backplate aswell.

Yes as the chip is the most complex/expensive part. But the PCBs and coolers are manufactured by the sub-vendors.

When it comes to non-reference PCBs they can be quite different, one brand can be a lot cheaper but less reliable and hotter than another.

In my country, where ambient temps are a bit high (30~35C in summer), the Palit GTX460 runs the hottest, then Gigabyte OC edition, then Asus DirectCU, and the eVGA runs coolest.

Get a non-reference card as they run cooler and OC better alot better. I like the dual fan designs from MSI and Asus.
