Yet another mechanical keyboard suggestion thread.

Thread Starter
Hey guys. I'm looking at going back to a mechanical keyboard, the last time I used one would be about 15 years ago though. I mostly just type on the computer, about 30% gaming / 70% typing.

I'm currently using the Razer Lycosa ME. There are a number of faults with it, so I'll need a keyboard in the very near future (< week)

From what I've read on these forums, the MX Blues are fine for both typing and gaming. These are my personal requirements:
  • Backlighting is a must, preferably blue
  • Full NKRO support, I've read in a review on OCN that the Razer BWU is only 2KRO.
  • Dedicated media keys are a plus, I don't mind if they are incorporated into the F keys like the Razer BWU or the xArmor U9BL, or if they are separate keys.

In terms of media keys, I like the idea of the Razer BWU and the Fn key for the media keys, however the U9BL using the Shift key could cause problems in some programs, no?

I've narrowed it down to either the Razer BlackWidow Ultimate, or the xArmor U9BL. Obviously open to more suggestions. Price isn't really an issue, but would like some input so I can make a decision + need to be shipped to Australia.

Cheers.

Do either of those keyboards have NKRO? Or even 6KRO?

From what I read in this review: http://www.overclock.net/keyboards/8...-ultimate.html

Apparently the Razer BWU is only 2KRO, when Manyak (the thread author) tried pressing Z+X+C, the C would get blocked. So there are some limitations on certain combinations. I would rather avoid that.

The xArmor U9BL has full NKRO support.

Yeah, the BWU is not NKRO. I'd go for the Xarmour then, probably better built than the Razer too.

I'd take the BWU over the XArmor without hesitation, least with Razer you get a good support crew [well I always have, never failed me once, always spoke perfect English which is a huge selling point for me]..

BUT

Your best option will be the Ducky Shine as seen here as it hits and meets each of your requirements ^^.

It will have full NKRO, though quite frankly I've yet to hit an issue with my BWU.. but whatever.

Blues are a pleasure to type on, absolutely love it

I'm leaning the same way, but still a bit unsure.

Only problem with that is it won't be available until August, even then I'm unsure of the availability to Australia.

I wouldn't mind the BWU, but after seeing the 2KRO 'problem', I'd rather avoid that.

Xarmor U9BL/U9BL-s/Qpad-MK80 are 6KRO over USB and NKRO over PS/2 (I'm sure)

The media keys are working via the dedicated FN key, not shift (I'm sure)

Older non backlit Xarmors aren't NKRO and use the shift (I believe)

I have the black widow ultimate and I have had no problems with it thus far. Did not realize it was 2nkro.

That ducky shine looks awesome though. Is there a set price for it yet? Might have to get me a second mech keyboard with browns or blacks. Probably browns since I do both typing and gaming. Gotta start checking out these other switches.

The Xarmor U9BL (not the S version) doesn't have a Fn key though.

I would have issues with the 2KRO due to the games I play (rhythm/music games)

The Ducky Shine looks to be available in August, and pricing hasn't been set yet. (After a quick skim over the thread that Munkypoo7 posted.

Yeah I skimmed that immediately. I will definitely be getting one the second they are available. Leaning towards reds or browns, not sure though. Black would be insufficient since I type on it as well. Blacks are those types of keyboards for pro gamers that travel with it just to game, or at least thats what it seems to me as home users will type and game on it.

From what I understand, browns, reds, and clears are best for gaming and typing.
