Router / PS3 connection Nightmare

This question is in particular to MLB 11 The Show but the fix would probably be less to do with the game and more with the hardware.

I have had this game since it came out and only played single player up until my friend bought it a month ago. We planned to have an online league.
Since that moment we've had nothing but problems.

Maddeningly, frustrating as all hell, every single game we try to play winds up getting delayed. It says DELAY TRAFFIC intermittently , with lots of lag - until around the 5th inning or so, it just boots us off.

I had 12 MB internet, but I upgraded to 18MB thinking it was the speed. I had a G wireless modem, but I upgraded to N thinking that was the problem. I thought it could be because I was on wireless, so I plugged in directly.

He has Verizon FIOS with about 15 MB download speeds, and faster upload speeds. He does use wireless.

I am at wits end now with this. I turned the firewall in the router off and that did not help.

I have tried to do reading of forums and most, if not all, people are playing fine with internet speeds much lower. Those that do have some problems have a bit of lag and nothing more. We are getting disconnected with every game we play. Please, I implore you, are we missing something?????

When the game is not in "delay" I move the ball around to aim a pitch and it doesnt respond it just sits there and then a few seconds later it moves?!?!? Its impossible to play even when we have a connection.

Who is hosting the game? Try to switch host's and if anyone of you has any internet consuming programs running (utorrent, emule, steam dl something) turn it off.

You can both also try to unplug your modem's for 2 minutes and plug them back.

Thanks for the suggestions Mark.

We've alternated who is hosting. Doesn't really seem to make much of a difference. We also have all other computers in the home on sleep mode, so I dont think that could be it.....

He hasn't unplugged the modem but i did when i replacing the router (and about 50 other times trying to get this fixed).

Bizarre and extremely frustrating. We try every night after work and have yet to make it through a complete game.

The only thing I can think of to do next is plug the internet cable directly into the ps3 from the modem. That should not be necessary but at least I can determine if its the router (which would be weird since its a new one)

You could both try to connect it directly to the modem. It wouldn't be a fix, but It would rule out most of the variables. If with both plugged in directly into the modem works well then you connect it normally but your friend has to keep it into the modem because I suspect it's a problem at your friends. If it works well then your friend has to fix something, if not you plug it into the modem and your friend plug it into it's normal place.

Sure it would be a long process but at least you would probably find the cause of the problems.

Id disable the media servers and give it a try, as the PS3 will constantly look for a media server, taking up some of the bandwidth.

Turn off DLNA or uPNP on the router. I had to do this when I used my PS3 for gaming. Now it works great for a paperweight.

Yeah, but it doesn't mean that connection issues are coming from his side. How do other games work online? If they work normally except the game you are trying to play with a friend it probably has something to do with friend's internet. Just my opinion.
Andd you got nothing to loose by disabling media server, so it's worth giving it a go
