i'm using a friend's windows xp cd key that he's also using currently too

Just because some versions let you install multiple times, doesn't mean it's technically legal

OEM versions are stripped down versions i.e. no big fancy box and manuals etc, just a disk. They're really for companies who install the software and don't want the extra BS. However if you're competent you don't need that stuff then you usually save money buying the OEM. There is no difference in licensing between oem and regular licenses, you need 1 key per install unless you have msdn or a special family pack key etc

what's msdn?

why do you say i need to take comp classes?

OEM = tied to original mb only (meaning once you install it not supposed to use on another system or even mb model)

Retail = install on once PC at a time but can change mbs or even entire systems so long as its not on any other pc

When you or your friends upgrade and MS realizes you have the same key on multiple machines they will deactivate the key or you'll fail authentication. Using a friends key is piracy and illegal

In my school, we get free licenses of Windows Everything. I'm majoring in Information Technology and Computer Engineering. Microsoft offers the same deals for most colleges with computing majors.

The only thing they don't provide is free licenses of Office. frown.gif

When I worked for University of Kentucky we got several free full software programs, Windows being one of them

i think i read people already suggest campus store. that is by far the cheapest way that i get mine (w7 ultimate 64-bit $45!). they say it is an upgrade version, but it can really be used to install a full version.

That is true, but... not all at once. Install it on one computer, then when you're done with that one and you've gotten rid of the Windows install on it, then it's okay to install again on a new computer, IF it's the full retail version.

MSDN is a great lil' thing that you get if you take the right computer class at a university. Free Windows 7 Pro, Free basically every Microsoft software, except Office.

So you'd get into MSDN! graduated.gif

My school also does the MSDN thing but stopped supplying us (this started the semester just finished) with XP and Vista keys. I am trying to come up with a formula as to when a Tech Net subscription makes sense.Right now I have my total Win 7 LAN and then a mixed LAN (of XP,Vista, Win 7 rigs) and a totaly seperate Server 2008R2 domain with Win 7 hosts so I do need a lot of keys. I also have a Linux network (I do not discriminate).
