MSI 6970 Lightning Q's

Thread Starter
Hi guys, just some questions i have need some help on.

You can see my rig specs below. I have just put in a MSI 6970 lightning 2gb and want to know if its running ok. This card has replaced my 4870x2 - i thought the x2 was huge when i first got it 3 years ago, but this 6970 even dwarfs that.!!

First the 18 or so LED's on the top of the card, all are green except the end 4 - is this normal??

Second i am having trouble determining what my card clock speeds are.
In ATI Catalyst it says its is set like the box reads. The sliders were at 880 gpu and 1350 ram, but in the box below the sliders Actual clocks read 250 gpu and 150 ram:confused: . ***??
When i open AMD Overdrive it also says 250/150.
In GPU-z it reads 880/1350.
In MSI afterburner 880/1350.

Which is correct??

Thanks guys.

clock speeds are both correct wink.gif You are seeing 2D clock speeds.. and what will apply for your 3D clock speeds..

* as for the LED's.. i dunno you need someone that owns 1x redface.gif to tell you
post #3 of 11
Im guessing the clocks reading 250 and 150 are downclocked for 2d (browsing etc). Havent used ccc as i just use afterburner, its much better really. As for the phase led's thats normal, same as mine wink.gif

Dont worry smile.gif

Hmm wait, my default speeds in afterburner are 940 core and 1375 mem.

And wow, i just read CL3PT0's post and didnt realise he posted about the downclocking, i really should pay more attention, like my teacher says i should ^^

Cool thanks - i thought it must have been ok when i scored 7.9 in my Windows ranking hehe. Not that means much.

I did wind up the GPU clock to 900 in afterburner and it was ok. So will play with it more once i have my Phenom OC worked out properly. Do you guys think my 6970 will be bottlenecked by the X4 965. Especially when i get the second one for a X-fire setup??

Your card should be at 940/1375 when gaming. The Green ones are the GPU's Phases and the Red ones are the Memory and PLL Phases. If they aren't lit then they aren't functioning.

http://www.techpowerup.com/gpuz/9cq37/

See, 940 Core and 1375 Memory stock clocks.

your default clock at load is 940/1375 with 1174 voltage

While browsing my clocks are 250/150 fan at 1156rpm, thats roughly what you should see while text browing.

CC on my system shows the sliders at 940/1375.

If yours are different that would seem odd.
Install the latest version of afterbuner.

1) Stock 3D clocks on the lightning are 940 core and 1375 memory @ 1.174v. Do you have a different version of the card? It has two 8 pin connectors, right?

2) The downclocking is normal. Open a 3D app to see the relevant clocks.

3) Also the LED thing is normal. My card does the same thing. See link below (quote in last post).

Yeah my Lightning is only 880 / 1350 stock:
http://www.scorptec.com.au/computer/41763-r6970-lightning-std

But i still dont know how they advertise it as 880 / 5500. How do they get 5500 as the mem clock when its only 1350 in afterburner. There was a 940/5500 available but was $100 more, i can just overlock it myself and save $100. Stupid!!!
