[MaximumPC] Intel Ponders Feasibility of PCI Express x2 Interface

Could the PCI Express interface beneft from a new, two-lane (x2) solution? That's the question Intel engineers are reportedly kicking around, according to VR-Zone.com's LG Nilsson. The reason is pretty simple. PCI-E x1 lacks sufficient bandwidth for data intensive devices, and PCI-E x4 is too wide for many peripheral chips, Nilsson says. Hence why Intel is at least considering an in-between.

Nvidia could go back to doing a decent add-on GPU for Netbooks.

that would be quite nice, I am rather fond of the removable / semi upgradable video cards of mini pci express in laptops..

My ASUS laptop has a removable video card, too bad an upgrade card for it costs too much and is likely not compatible with the stock cooling solution - I would really (as a gamer) love to see a standard removable upgradable video card solution for laptops PLEASE.

Like MXM but much better would be nice

Hmm I wonder if this would be pushed to external slot though.. idk.. why not just use thunderbolt port for external video cards for laptops?

Seems like a waste to me. When they are saying 4x is 'too wide' they simply mean its overkill. Whats the cost savings between implementing a 2x slot vs a 4x slot on the motherboard? I dont know but I would hazard an extremely optimistic guess that its < 10 cents per motherboard. Then peripheral card manufacturers would also have to see a decent cost savings to redesign and switch over to this new 2x slot.

It's not the physical cost... it is about the electrical implementation.

The number of avaliable PCIe lanes are defined. For example, the P67 has 8 PCIe lanes. The only possible configurations are:
8x
4x,4x
4x,1x,1x,1x,1x
1x,1x,1x,1x,1x,1x,1x,1x

By adding a 2x standard (which won't be hard do), the options will be:
8x
4x,4x
4x,2x,2x
4x,2x,1x,1x
4x,1x,1x,1x,1x
2x,1x,1x,1x,1x,1x,1x
2x,2x,1x,1x,1x,1x
2x,2x,2x,1x,1x
1x,1x,1x,1x,1x,1x,1x,1x

This gives more flexibility in on-board device and slot configuration.
Once again...

Intel's Thunderbolt allows for external GPUs like the new Sony VAIO hybrid has. In another year or two we will see a lot more external GPUs connected with Thunderbolt so you can dock your laptop at home and use a much more powerful GPU. If combined with Lucid you should be able to Xfire/SLI them.

This is dumb, they might replace X4 with X2, whats the point? Id rather have an X4 and not use it than an X2 and lose bandwidth.
