[MaximumPC] Carmack Rages Over Devs' “Snooty Attitude” Toward Call of Duty - Page 3

If CoD brought back offline lan and relied less on exclusive dedicated servers (blops) or p2p (mw2) then I would be happy. Any game that moves the multiplayer experience away from the old formula (offline lan/freely available dedicated server client) loses points in my book.

I like my games to work, and recently most of the games have taken either a few patches to work properly (BC2) or have not worked at all multiplayer-wise (SupCom2, MW2, etc).

if you want to play a good shooter, there are other options besides call of duty. this just is not true for MMO's.

as far as being better at CoD, it's easier to play and we are all better at it(i should hope). that's why you come across more young children and women in CoD than any other shooter. a big part of "mass appeal" is low difficulty, simple controls and little to no learning curve.

i'm not knocking CoD here either, just answering a question.

The difference between an Apple/CoD fanboy and a hater is very thin.
Fanboys buy apple because it's Apple, haters bash Apple because it's Apple
They are just different kind of sheeps

Just remember, because something is popular doesn't mean it sucks, it means several people are looking for the same thing.
If you want to be "different from the masses" well... grow up?

Carmack can scream that CoD sucks (and I'll happily agree) all he wants, it doesn't matter: many people, his very customers actually, like CoD.
I think CoD is a plague to gaming in general, but that doesn't make the people who buy it any more stupid than I am or anything.

Let's all have a big giant hug now.

At the end of the day, customer satisfaction is all that matters. If they enjoyed the previous version, they will buy the next version. They will continue to do so until the product no longer satisfies them. Humans are creatures of comfort.

Whilst I may not personally enjoy the COD series anymore, I won't belittle the series considering how well it's selling.

People can come in here and tell me that quality doesn't equal quantity all they want, but when a game is topping nearly every chart imaginable, I don't see how they have valids arguments to oppose the figures and statistics.

I put it down to personal opinion.
You're missing out on a lot of factors here, mainly marketing and hype.

Products do not make day one sales records based on how good the game is, especially when COD demos come out like 6 months after release.

They achieve it with marketing, hype and previous success.

Then there's the hive mind that comes after. If "everyones" bought the game and "everyones" playing it, then anyone who wants to play with their friends is going to be playing that game as "everyone" bought the hype etc etc etc.

Then there's the advantage taking of young and naive minds. Once something becomes "the thing to do/have", young people will just take it into their hearts like a new member of the family and they'll be played till the next "thing to do" comes along.

Customer satisfaction means nothing when you market hard enough that you are the only visible choice. How many COD fans would be "more" satisfied if they attempted to buy a different shooter? How many COD fans would be "more" satisfied if that shooter was getting more hype than COD? Probably much more so, just because "everyone" will be doing it and it will be the new "thing". Customer satisfaction is based on a lot more than the actual product, which as nonsensical as it sounds, is a weird truth in most industries.

At the end of the day, when a company is essentially selling a re-skin year after year for full price, people are going to start getting moody and noone, not even this guy has the right to tell people about their own opinions.

Success/numbers really is not everything.

The point when one becomes an Apple/anything fanboy is when they start telling me my system/favorite game is not good because it isn't Apple (WINDOZE GET VIRUS OMG). This has happened to me numerous times, mostly by adults that try and sound smart by saying things like "itz built on linux core lol so stable". Literally, that is the smartest thing they can say. I've experienced more crashes on OSX in the little I use it (Church computer and GF's macbook) then I have on my desktop in 24/7 use.

Sorry for that little rant, just kept spewing out. Back on topic...

I think you should read the actual article.

EDIT: I don't know whether or not you'd consider me a fanboy, but I dislike Apple for two main reasons. One is that they standardize all their hardware and limit their OS. Two is that they market this whole "cult" attitude as if all the informed buyers are Apple users and anyone who still uses a Windows OS is just a sheep. Almost ironic, really.

Carmack can understand where Call of Duty is coming from. Both CoD and Carmack recycle the same game over and over again. The only difference is Carmack comes out with a new game engine every few years. CoD still keeps the same game engine.

Carmack has a point, though I put it in a different context. If people are willing to shell out cash for CoD 4.6.2, then it's not really Activision's fault. Business-wise, it's actually quite ingenious.

Besides that, I saw some gameplay footage of Black Ops single player not too long ago and it looked quite good. Problem is, the crazy short campaigns in these games completely turns me off.
