Superflower Golden Silent 500W Fanless PSU

Has anyone thought about this power supply? As far as I know it is the only fanless 500 watt power supply on the market. It is also 80+ Platinum certified. This is the highest wattage fanless powersupply I've seen that also scores well on reviews (ie won't ruin components). My 5+ year goal of a <15db gaming rig may now be possible! I'm still just in thinking phase, but something like:

PSU $210 (a lot for only 500 watts)
mATX board @ $150
i5 processor @ 3ghz with a big chunk of metal on top, $350
GPU 6750 fanless
120gb ssd $250
6gb ram DDR3 @1600mhz with heatsyncs $150
DVD drive $50

The PSU benchmark site I tried said 500w could cover this system. With after market heatsyncs for motherboard (northbridge, etc) total would be around $1,200. In terms of a case, I might get very creative with a large metal fishing-tackle box I no longer need.

500watts would be plenty for that setup. I think you will be good to go. I would get a low speed 120mm fan so you have a small amount of airflow, but still slow enough to not generate noise.

All fanless PSUs still require some forced airflow.

Just get a PSU with an inaudible fan.

The cooling difference between an inaudible build and silent build is huge. Even a little airflow helps a lot.

the point is that you need some airflow though. So if you buy a fanless PSU you still need to put at least 1 fan in the system or it will all cook, as those 500 Watts you'll be drawing at peak need to go somewhere. You can build an Atom or similar low-power setup that draws sub-50W and get away with no fans, but it just isn't possible with higher end components.

You can also consider the Seasonic X series PSU. Those run passive when you aren't under load, but the fan will kick in if necessary.

Take a good quality mATX case, fill it with 120mm fans, hook them all up to a controller, and turn them down till they barely spin?

My current system has no fans except for the power supply. i7 920 and ATI 5850 gpu. When maxed out the CPU hits 53 c and the gpu gets to 60c. Northbridge used to get too hot until I installed aftermarket heatsyncs, it gets to 65c max now.

There a world of difference between a computer in a closed case and a computer that is open air. If I put a case on my current system it would overheat.

No, it doesn't have a fan.

you never mentioned you ran it open air - by doing so you get sufficient convection flow with careful design so that you're bits don't cook. However with a PSU (which has to be enclosed) you can't get that same convection - they're designed to sit in a PC case that has some airflow and will force some air in either direction through the PSU (depending on whether you have a positive or negative pressure case).
