Help with overclock! (About to throw my computer in the trash)

Thread Starter
Alright, so about a year ago when I bought this computer I tried overclocking it. Someone on here tried and helped me get it to 4.0. However we ran into a problem. The pc wont boot at a ram speed of 1333 or 1066 don't remember, which is what we set it to to allow the overclock head room. So We left the ram at 1600 and oced to 4.0 and it allowed us to boot and ran prime95 for couple hours and everything was good even though the ram was set at like 1800 or something high like that.

A week or so later my computer wouldn't start, no post or anything, so i cleared cmos and it booted up fine. I thought it may have been an unstable oc. So I tried again this time only to 3.5ghz. Same thing happened

Few days ago, I tried again with 3.7ghz. Same thing happens. However this time I was able to keep the ram below 1600 which its what its rated at. But that didn't work. After few days my computer wont start up and I had to clear cmos.

Anything that may cause this?

I need to overclock because i am planning on getting a 2nd 5850. That will cause a bottleneck on my cpu being only at 2.8. I want it to get it just high enough to not have a bottleneck and be able to play on high settings.

i think around 3.4 would be plenty to eliminate bottleneck. try checking your RAM cards, you may have damaged them...you did say this was like a year ago that you OCed correct?

The ram looks fine. I ran memtest on them and passed. Yes I tried ocing a year ago and than a week ago and today I wasn't able to boot my computer.

I will try 3.4 thanks!

My temps are great, never going above 42ish and idling at 20ish. I have my pc in the basemeant and its really cool down there.

The last thing I was doing was I tried to play a quicktime video my computer became really laggy I was moving my mouse but it was going really really slow like it would take 2 seconds to move an inch. The movie didn't start so I just forced restart. When the computer restarted it froze on the windows screen the one you get after post. So I restarted again. This there was no display. I thought it was my graphic card, so I tried my motherboard onboard vga, still no display. So I rested the cmos and I got a boot.

yea thats F***ed up man. Sounds like your CPU is frying. Using a 4.0 OC on a chip like that for that long definately shortens its life.
I wouldn't OC it again to be honest with ya.
you may need to look into a new chip

Keep in mind that AMDs Bulldozer is coming out very soon....8 Cores BABY!

You should attempt to sell your cpu/mobo now before the prices drop out from the bulldozer release.

Are you serious? The Thubans are well known for overclocking past the 4ghz range and most owners do so. The chip isn't frying. His temperatures are extremely cool. I'm not saying his CPU wasn't possibly damaged but to say that taking his chip to 4ghz in the first place was bad is just ignorance.
