Underclocking a 955 or 965

Thread Starter
I'm planning to upgrade the CPU in my sig rig in the next month or two, but I just learned my board won't handle anything above 95w.

Can I easily underclock a 955 or 965 so it only uses 95w or less until I upgrade my board? Or should I just get a 945? I might do some light overclocking once I get a new board.

I'm planning to get a second 5770 for now too and then upgrade my board and RAM next spring or summer. I don't need a super high-performance machine. I just do medium gaming, mostly games like Oblivion, Civ IV, Sins, and TF2, but I do want to get Skyrim in November.

Just get a 945, it'll be faster than any 955 or 965 that's underclocked enough to work in the board.

I wouldn't recommend a 125w cpu in a 95w board - the board may not even boot with the processor in it, and if it does you could have some serious problems as the boards typically don't have enough power phases to support the higher wattage CPU. Underclocking it doesn't chance the CPUs recommended wattage - it will take down actual usage, but still not recommended. Just wait until you get a new board and upgrade everything together (or get a 95W CPU)

The biggest problem is going to be whether or not the mobo would even allow you to use it. You might check with MSI or see if anyone else has had success...

A manually under-clocked and properly under-volted 955/965 can have the same or less effective TDP than a 945 that is running stock. Drop the multi to 15 to match the 945, drop CPU Vcore to ~1.2V, NB to ~1.1625V and do stability testing. Raise voltage in small increments if necessary to achieve stability.

Does anyone actually think that every AMD CPU with a 125W TDP rating actually uses exactly 125W under full load? No more and no less?

The TDP ratings are more like categories. Just like not all 30 weight engine oils are actually the same weight. There is a surprisingly wide range of viscosity that fits the criteria for a 30 weight oil. I'd be very surprised if TDP ratings weren't similar in that they really should be thought of more as a possible range.

The K9A2 CF-F uses a lower quality NIKOS MOSFET design and unlike the bigger brother K9A2 platinum is known for the same blow-up issues as more recent MSI boards. That and it's also a 3+1 phase, which is never suitable for >95W processors, so unsuitable that most mobo manufacturers i.e. Gigabyte never rate these motherboards for those processors.
I think it's rated at 95W tdp for a good reason.

For warranty purposes among other things you should NEVER exceed the board rated TDP.

Thread Starter
MSI originally supported 125W processors on this board when I bought it, but then people started having problems with fires in their cases. That's when they removed support for anything over 95W and released a 2nd revision with a better quality MOSFET design that does support 125W processors.

I've found several places online where people are still running higher power CPUs in rev. 1 boards, so I know it'll run, and I'm not worried about the warranty at this point on a 4 year old board. But it sounds like underclocking a 125W processor until I get a new board isn't quite worth it. I'll probably just pick up a 945 or maybe wait until next spring when I can afford a new board as well.

Thanks everyone for the help!

it will run, ts, oh it will run.

A 95w-only board will run a 125w processor. It can even run a 955 @ 3.8 on p95 for the whole 30 minutes. Then it fries. Take my current sig, replace the board with a 95w board, then there you have it. It was the reason I came to ocn in the first place.
