Macbook pro laptop HDD update

Thread Starter
Hi guys,

I'm about to update my 2 year old macbook pro 15.4" 256 GB HDD

I have the following options:

Samsung
Sata 2 8mb 5400 rpm 500 gb
HM500JI

Toshiba
Sata 2 8mb 5400 750 MK7559GSXT

Samsung
HM321HI*

In my case performance is a priority over space.

Thx for advice!

I'm going to say the 1st Samsung drive should be the "fastest" although they are all going to be within a couple % of each other, so I would personally take the 750GB drive (Especially since you could "short stroke" the drive by formatting the first 500GB and only using that [which will most likely be faster than using the Samsung 500gb as typically after the 75% point speed drops significantly])

Why not try for a 7200rpm hard drive? Or are you stuck with choosing between those two?

Hi, I finally bought the 750 GB drive.

I'm afraid I did not read your post in time.

I've already formatted my drive, I've done a big partition that occupies all available disc space.

Is it still possible to short stroke by reducing the size of my partition? are there programs that can do that?

Thanks for the answers! + REP

If you want a fast laptop drive, WD Scorpio Blacks are definitely the way to go.

You can short-stroke by partitioning less. Just resize the partition smaller from Disk Management. If windows sticks everything near the front of the drive, you'll get the same effect as a short stroke, but good luck encouraging it to do so.

Get a 7200RPM 750GB drive. Will work fine.
