Home security video recording machine

Thread Starter
This really is not a server question, but kinda is.

What would I need for a video recording home security system?
Is it something I could run on my server, or should I get a dedicated rig for it?

I am just looking for a simple single camera system (like this camera).
Would any tv tuner with RCA input do what I need? Do I need special software to record?

Any help would be appreciated.

I went with the IP Cameras and I regret it. I wish I went with either wireless video or wired video. IP cameras are just a PITA. You have to either use proprietary software or fumble around a Chinese web-based configuration website.

I suggest you go the wired/wireless video approach. This way you can input into a standard video capture device. Yes, like you mentioned a TV tuner card would work and you can record with VLC or something similar.

Just my thought.

Yes that would be the best, get a capture card for it and you need a recording program that will allow it to capture like 1 frame a sec. If you try to capture true video i would take huge amounts of file space.

Personally I like my Ip-cameras but you have to spend some money to get decent ones. I always have wanted to get some the PTZ ip-cams but they are crazy expensive. My little server host video streaming of standard files and does motion recording of 2x ip cameras. The problem is if I am streaming video to my phone and a camera starts to record at the same time it pegs out my CPU and streaming video to snag. Time for my to get a stronger processors I guess.

If you want to go the analog route you could get a 4ch capture cards just in case you wanted to add a camera later
