U2711 Impressions

So yesterday I got my U2711, this is my first monitor over 1080p and first IPS monitor. I sold my Surround set up to purchase this, so many of my impressions will be based off of that.

Since I tend to ramble, I will make this a pros and cons list of the u2711 to keep it short.

Pros of U2711:
  • Colors, omg the colors. So amazing.
  • Resolution, great. This visual upgrade is greater than any graphics card update I have done, more pixels=looks better for most games.
  • Usability: Almost every game boots right into 2560x1440. With my surround set up I couldn't even get some games to start.
  • Hardware Strain: Actually much less than my surround set up, but a better visual experience

Cons of U2711
  • Anti-glare coating. I would still prefer this as opposed to a mirror coating like the Apple displays have, but I don't know why Dell couldn't just use a standard matte coating. I am hoping I adjust to it in time. I don't notice it at all in games, but browsing or word editing it almost looks my screen is dusty. Its a weird sensation, if you look *through* the AG coating, you dont even see it, if you look *at* it, it really sticks out, and when you are reading a long work document and your eyes get bored, it can get really distracting.
  • Screen Size: Almost a bit too big. My desk isn't too deep, so I may be sitting too close, but I can miss some action on the edge of my screen if I am focusing on the center. I will probably adjust to this in time soon too.
  • FPS Competitive Advantage: The big reason I would get a Surround set up instead of this is if you play a lot of online FPS games. The peripheral vision does come in handy. If you play a lot of RPGs, puzzle games, RTS games, or any game that you don't need to see the slightest movement to your side to stay competitive, the U2711 is probably the better choice. Even single player FPSs are designed around a 16:9 aspect ratio, so the peripheral vision would not help you nearly as much.
  • Workspace: I have a separate monitor along with my u2711 for when I am working on something. This comes in handy to have multiple monitors open. Because the Windows 7 drag to the side and to the top of the screen don't work well in surround, I prefer the u2711 for workspace. On the contrary, if you don't have a secondary monitor with your u2711, you may find yourself not able to multitask as easily as you would with an surround set up.

Conclusion: U2711 is definitely the better choice for people like me, unless you play a lot of online FPS games and need that every last advantage.

I too just sold my surround setup except I decided that the switch from 25.5" Asus monitors to a 27" Dell wouldn't be enough, so I went with the U3011 - can't wait to get it on Monday, hope its as awesome as everything I hear about them!

I'm sure you will love it! I was thinking about the U3011, but I like the 16:9 form factor more. An extra 3 inches and a bunch of pixels will be great though!

I'm switching from an eyefinity setup to two of these monitors. They should come sometime early next wait, can't wait. After I made the purchase, I heard a lot of negative things about the ag coating that none of the reviews seem to mention. Hopefully it won't be too bad because most of what I'll be using these monitors is web design. Thanks for the first impressions btw.
