80% idle CPU usage 965be?1!?!?

Thread Starter
Little dilemma im trying to solve for my buddy, just today his Idle cpu usages are like 80%++ and his temps are like 50C idle because of that.

He did spyware checks, everything checked out, malware bytes, no infections. He doesn't know what is making it spike up like that.

Anyone ever had any issues like this with these cpu's?

Is his heatsink properly attached/affixed? That temperature at idle is beyond even abnormal.

Also, can we get that dude banned? I know he's really edgy and cool, posting a pic of a vag and trollin' like a pro, but it's rather annoying.

Open up task manager, click the 'Processes' tab, click the 'Show processes from all users' button, sort by CPU. Post a screenshot or write down top 5 offending procs. It sounds like there's a service misbehaving (if you've already ruled-out malware).

if his processor is at 80+% usage at idle then something is running in the background have ya checked the Task manager and processes to see if there is anything using what is displayed on usage ignore system idle if it's 99% usage that's normal redface.gif, could be something he installed previously without noticing and such i know it happens.

Yea i know that temp is abnormal, but the main issue here is the CPU USAGE at IDLE. Its over 80% at idle.... thats obviously not right. Hence the temp increase. Why is the usage so high AT idle?

Now he is getting like 20 FPS in l4d2

He has a GTX560, so i know l4d2 aint supposed to be running at no 20fps.

Well when he's ready for you to fix it, follow these steps (it's easy).

Download process explorer (excellent free utility by Mark Russinovich) from here. Run it and sort by CPU usage descending. It will show you the CPU usage of all processes and services (like Windows task manager, only better).

Once you find out which process/service is sucking down the cores, right-click on it and select properties. If it's a process, kill it (choose 'Kill Process Tree'). If it's a service, stop it. Be advised that the service will start again on reboot unless you tell it not to. Also be advised that if you kill a service (as opposed to stopping it) then it will usually just start itself again. The 'Stop' command is on the 'Services' tab of the properties dialog.

This is a quick-and-dirty fix and likely will not solve the long term problem. However there are so many variables involved I can't help you with a permanent fix without more info.

Huh?!?!

Half of this thread doesn't seem to understand what system idle process means, look to the right, % of time the processor is idle.

So, as some have said, if your on 80%, you have processes using 20%, not idle.
