GTA4 FPS drop

Thread Starter
Hi guys, i recently upgraded my system with new EVGA GTX 560 GPU (from 9800GT) and i noticed that i can't play GTA4 smoothly on "high" texture settings (FPS drops all the time). I saw this video on YT:-

[ame]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=m1AVcHLVimo[/ame]

This guy has almost same specs as my rig only that hes got GTX 460 and i have GTX 560 (and i think the latter is better). He is getting some 60+ FPS with highest settings (without FRAPS and on stock speeds) while mine dwindles around 30 on just "high" settings.

So, does anyone have any idea what might be causing this? Is it my GPU not getting enough power or something? How do i check if this is the case?
Thanks a lot.

Resolution difference?

What I can tell you is GTA IV is poorly optimized and is heavily CPU dependent. Your i5 760 at stock is definitely hindering performance (at least somewhat), and an overclock would alleviate some of your FPS issues.

Thanks for the prompt reply! But the guy in the video claims all speeds are on stock. Is it possible?
I am holding off oc till i get a good CPU cooler. Will be getting one soon.

should also point out GTA4, even with a medium view distance uses more than 1GB of Vram at 1080p.

I am playing it on a much lower res. Only 1366x768.

Does anybody else notice that 'The lost and damned' and 'The ballad of gay tony' is a lot better optimised than GTA 4?

I only have a core 2 duo and GTA 4 stutters a lot for me. But for some reason the expansions run very smooth on high settings. And it doesn't melt my laptop. They should apply a patch to make GTA 4 run that smoothly.

Depending on how high you have the slider, it could still be surpassing it.

No, it says its using about 800 something megs on high and 400 something megs on medium.

that memory usage indicator in gta 4 is not correct....
i have an gtx 460 and same res as u...i play with the draw distance slider at 50 and most settings high-very high....
and i get 30-60 depending on scene....mostly its in the 30's....
im also fedup with this poorly optimized game...

so if u want more fps just oc ur cpu....

and if u want the benchmark info then just tell me at what settings to benchmark(using in game bench app) and i will do it....

But isnt that weird that the guy in the video is playing maxed out everything on stock speeds?
