Trying out the Phenom 955, suggestions on what else to tweak? - Page 3

I think temps are a critical issue for you here... at least for me the temps you are stating are hitting a bit close to dangerous. Cpu Heat Sinks for AMD are supposed to have a more precise placement sometimes. Meaning for some models are meant to be rear facing or top facing.

Yeah the Zalman is supposed to be horizontally aligned with the front intake and rear exit fans. I just didn't realize that the cpu bracket could be slid through the heat pipes when i mounted it. Which would've allowed me to mount i correctly. 55 is too high for the phenom?

No, but I think it would be wiser if you get a better cooler. Perhaps the CoolerMaster Hyper 212 Plus would be a good option. I am willing to make a bet that you will be getting better temps than the one you have now.

I do agree that the temps aren't too high, but yes they are an issue, the ambient heat around the cpu could cause other parts around the area, including the RAM to heat up, though the motherboard you are using should limit the heat damage to the other components around your cpu. If you could reposition the heat sink correctly, and take note on the amount of compound that is used, being that it isn't spread too thin and not completely lathered on there.

With that being addressed, you should still be able to OC once you reach a stable, starting point with preferred suggestion of the RAM running at a 2T CR, for helping with stability. We can slowly help push things forward of course, but rushing and too much information always leads to a bit of confusion, usually.

I'll have to get around to reseating it and connecting the fan speed controller, to turn things up a notch. More than likely just going to work for 3.8 and try to get it stable. I've set everything back to stock and tried to run Ram at 1600mhz and still get Windows experience failure. Which makes no sense unless the IMC just can't take it, or the software has been corrupted. I have everything back at stock now and For some reason now i run windows experience and i get 7.5 for cpu rating as opposed to 7.3 i had when i first ran the assessment. I've gone through the windows CD and command prompt and did dkschk and everything checked out. I got it to 4.0 to the point where i could get through Windows experience and company of heroes bench, yet if i try to move further on NB or memory it's like hitting a brick wall. 3.8 might just be my mark here. I would like to have 4.0 but i can't see my Zalman being up to the task of cooling the phenom @ 1.45+ volts for 4.0. Since i just got the Zalman this summer, i doubt i'll be spending money on another cooler. Not used to having heat affect a system like this.

I understood what you stated, except for what the actually setting were for what had passed WEI. The Stock settings for your RAM are at a high frequency right? But 1600I can't pass, so its lower? At the moment I will assume you have the multiplier set to increase the CPU to 3.8Ghz?

When i had it at 4.0 i passed WEI with Ram(1333mhz 9-9-9-24/1T) and NB on auto (both HT and NB at 2000mhz) and vcore at 1.425. Other than that i've failed WEI on every other attempt. I also set everything back to stock, and put the memory speed at 1600mhz. That as well failed WEI.

The one time i got it to pass WEI @ 4.0 it rated my CPU at 7.5. Weird thing is i've now set everything back to stock and re-ran WEI and cpu is still at 7.5. So i figured software was corrupted, I booted from the windows disk went to repair and ran dskchk, it passed. So i tried WEI again and it's still rating the CPU at 7.5. But since i rated my CPU when i first started the computer up after i finished building it, i've downloaded windows updates. And i'm wondering if SP1 could be causing my cpu to be rated at 7.5 due to it being more optimized or something of the sort?

Right now i'm back to running stock. While i did rush to jump to 4.0 it was really just to test the water and see what i could do early on. That being said i'll be looking at going back up to 3.6 and work up from there. Hit 3.6 get it stable and go on. At 4.0 i was more than likely being too conservative, highest i went was 1.4325xx on vcore, even though rated spec is 1.35-1.55 it just bothers me, i guess because i've been with my E8400 and Q9550 for so long.

Blackops, your problems really does sound a bit weird. Do you think reformatting and re-installing could solve the issue? I can't think of any way to help you out.

The thought has crossed my mind more than once. I more than likely will in a couple of days. The way i see it, it couldn't hurt. Sure it would be a PITA to re-install/re-patch some games but thats not a big deal. For what it's worth i'm prone to unexplained computing problems lol, especially lately.

The WEI issue may actually change from time to time, lowering to maybe down to 7.3 again and back up to about 7.5 due to the fluctuations of the frequencies and voltages. They will change subtly every now and then, but it wont be something noticeable.

If you watch the temps of the CPU, it should be able to reach 1.45v range very easily without worries. It is good that you are cautious. Moving from Intel to AMD is a complete change in how things handle with what is important. Even from one socket type to the next has many changes. Hopefully you will have luck with what you try to do.
