Trying out the Phenom 955, suggestions on what else to tweak? - Page 5

Don't get me wrong, the Zalman may be adequate for small overclocks. But here, you're trying to hit the 3.8-4.0Ghz clocks, and I am being honest. It won't hold up nicely at all. Sorry to say that the zalman isn't working for you.

If you plan on going watercooling, then hold off buying another cpu cooler, unless you got ample of money to burn, lol. As for your situation now, back the CPU a little bit, (somewhere 3.5-3.6?) depending on your temps. If you play heavy games, I am sure it shouldn't bottleneck much.

The Zalman isn't exactly counted out yet, not that i'm doubting you but with the fan speed controller i could see getting some extra performance out of it. Might sound like the computer is about to take off but noise isn't a factor luckily. I guess i thought the zalman was a huge upgrade from the rosewill i had on my Q9550 lol.

Yeah your right, just boggles me how AMD cpu's are Temperature sensitive. Don't have ample money to burn or that rig would be ready . Spent a ton of money on guns this summer, then switched my interest to upgrading my PC. I've also given thought to the Corsair WC heatsinks, in a cool room i imagine it would hold substantial results over air.
Right now i'm running 5rds of IBT on maximum @ 3.6. Load temps are hitting 53-54.

Off topic but equally strange, my Q9550 @ stock with 4gb of DDR2800 and my old 4890 xxx edition got a minimum frame rate of 58fps on Coh maxed out @ 1400x1050. Yet when i had my Q9550 @ 3.4 coupled with my GTX-470 at that res i got around 20+, even with my E8400 at 3.6 it didn't improve much. This is generally a game that favors Nvidia over ATI. Kinda makes me wonder about my GTX-470 it's factory OCed but something doesn't seem right for it be getting those results, hell it can't be that bottlenecked i wouldn't think.

Very good.

As for your off topic, your 4890 gets 58FPS but your 470GTX gets 20+?! Are your settings the same for both? I mean like same resolution, using 4x AA (if you have it), etc?

As per your game COH, never played it myself, nor do I know it. You have other games you can test with? Something that I am more familiar/perhaps played before? I just want to see your results and compare.

For my COD: MW2 using a dual core AMD 64x2 5600 @ 3ghz with an 8800GT along with a 1680x1050 resolution with 4AA, I get around 50~60FPS. Which is very good.

It's company of heroes. Yup maxed out 8x AA @ 1400x1050. I'm now playing at 1920x1080 and the 470 gets around 8fps minimum but avgs 60s.

Just passed 5rds of IBT maximum max load temp was 54C. Finally progress

I'm wanting to run prime95 for 24hrs whats a good FFt setting to get the CPU going 100%?

Beautiful! Eh, never played Company of Heroes either. Maybe I am just a COD guy.

Not sure how many rounds of IBT to qualify for stability since I don't use it myself. But I know you can push it more, but right now its 55c and Phenom tends to get unstable anything over 55c.

Now all you gotta do is save up the money and prepare for your watercooling rig (if you choose to go there), if not, then look for good mid to high-end range coolers. Be sure to measure the dimension of your case before making a purchase, otherwise you could run into problems with the heatsink not being able to fit in your case.

Good luck!

Thats why i never made the jump to 120mm. When i first started my E8400 build i wanted a TT but wasn't sure it would fit, with the 250mm side fan in the case, so i got a cheap rosewill with similar design that is a tad shorter. 5rds of IBT isn't good enough IMO 10-20 is decent and then 24hrs p95 and i feel confident. For example i had bad sticks of ram on my Q9550 build, passed 10rds of IBT but would crash and restart within an hour of p95. Replaced the sticks and then stopped p95 10 1/2 hrs in and achieved 10 rds of IBT, yet i got BSOD in coh. Upped vcore from 1.200 to 1.206. Got 10rds of IBT and 24hrs stable p95, didn't have any problems from there on. IBT does seem to put more stress on cpu than prime because my load temps will vary about 5-7C. But i like how you can max out your memory usage in IBT. Both are still necessary though.

Still might try and squeak 3.7-3.8, if i can get this 24hrs stable. Also some time will be adjusting the heatsink and increasing fan rpms to see how far i can bring temps down.

IF you feel that 5rd of IBT isn't good enough, then do whatever you feel that is comfortable for you.

For me, I'm not very good at overclocking my memory, just the CPU. I usually try to tighten my memory timing. Then I run Orthos 12 hours to see if it pass. Then next day I run Everest 24 hours. After that, I know it stable. Its just my method of testing.

Edit: Found CM Hyper 212+ for $25. http://www.overclock.net/online-deal...-212-plus.html (I know you're going on water, but if you're impatient and just want to hit the high frequency on air, then this could a steal).

Found a guide here on the forum, i set min FFT to 2096 and max to 4096. With memory to test at 6000mb. Right now Cpu is at 100% and memory at 85%. Temp is 52C. Going to let it go for 24hrs. If it passes, first thing is i'm going to put memory at 1600mhz and timings at 7-10-8-27/2T see if I can get that stable, would definitely help performance. Wondering if i should shoot for a higher NB freq? I've been told 2200-2400 is more than enough, but i've also read that i should go as high i as i can..

Actually you want it to be around 2600~3000 IF you can.
