I'd keep the 460 768mb... personal preference. I was in a somewhat similar situation with a 768mb 460 and a gtx 275. In the end, the 460 was just much quieter and much cooler. The performance difference was almost non-existent to my naked eye, especially at those resolutions. DX11 would keep the cards lifespan relevant for a little bit longer and the 460 just overclocks so damn easily. Great utility card. If heat and noise are not an issue and you want simply the fastest possible just between those two, the 280 may edge it out a bit.
I'm not too concerned for lifespan since I don't believe I'll keep either after the new AMD cards come out. I just don't want to sell the faster card and keep the slower one. At stock, I know the GTX280 is faster, but I can't find any OC charts and I know the GTX460 OCs like a beast. Maybe I'll bench a few things before I sell one off. I should be able to put that computer together on Tuesday because I'm still waiting on a Hyper 212 to show up.
