I was wondering how much would I have to overclock an Athlon II X4 640 to match a Phenom X4 955?

3.3-3.4 should be about enough to compensate for the cache. Difference's not so big actually.

Agreed, Im running a Athlon II X2 250 Regor on my Backup system and a Phenom II X2 555 BE on my main rig both running at 3.2Ghz and there's really not much of a performance leap until it comes to Media Encoding and Overclocking then the Phenom beats it by a Long shot...

Windows Experience Index
------------------------------
Athlon 250: 6.6
Phenom 555: 6.7 (OC @4.0Ghz gets 6.9)
