My first build - 2600k

Thread Starter
Hey guys. I'm pretty new to the forums here and I've been reading all the posts getting some ideas for OC my new rig. I was hoping to make a build log as well, when I order all the parts. I was hoping for some advice / thoughts on the build I have picked out.

A little background first, I work 2 jobs and spend a lot of time with the girlfriend, so this computer will an occasional gaming machine - Rift, WoW, Brink, and CoD mostly. I also want to be able to play some future games as well. Other than that, the machine will be used for some movie watching, web surfing, research, documents, etc. Nothing TOO extreme. I do plan on OC'ing the processor to probably 4.3 - 4.6 GHz, just for fun mainly. Cable management is important to me, I can be somewhat OCD so I like things to look good (Even though I don't have a modular power supply picked out). I was hoping to go with a blue / black scheme, and like a case with a window.

So here's what I have picked out so far:

  • Intel i7 2600k (Already purchased)
  • Corsair H50
  • Cooler Master GX Series RS650 80 PLUS Certified
  • ASRock P67 Extreme6 (B3) LGA 1155
  • Corsair Nova Series 2 60GB SSD
  • NZXT M59 Black Steel ATX Mid Tower Case
  • Seagate Barracuda 1TB 7200RPM HDD
  • G.Skill Sniper 8GB (2 x 4GB) DDR3 1600 MHz
  • Asus GTX460 1GB ( Will get a second one later down the road for SLI )
  • Asus Optical Drive
  • Rosewill 120mm Blue LED Fan x3

Any feedback would be appreciated! Thanks guys.

Look's a great build mate. Have you considered the 2500k, because it is a fair bit cheaper, and unless you are doing heavy tasks like rendering or encoding, I don't believe you will see the difference

Everything looks great apart from that, make sure to read reviews on the case, to prevent you regretting the purchase like I did with my first case

Also, if you go for the 2500k instead (I would in your position) I would spend the saved money on a H70 cooler instead

Edit: Being dumb, didn't see you already purchased the 2600K. But yeah, everything looks fine

Yeah I thought about that 2500k, but then I got an awesome deal from Intel on the 2600k.

One other thing I didn't mention is I also have the H50 in my possession, and I plan on cleaning off the pre-applied thermal tape and using some arctic silver.

I replaced the stock paste on my h50 with as5 and saw no improvement. The factory is supposed to be better.

Thanks for the tip there! I won't waste $12 and 20 min of my time.

Obligatory "get a samsung spinpoint f3 1tb" instead of the Barracuda.

I think many can attest that the H50 is worse than Air Cooler's around that price point.

How much are you willing to spend on a PSU? Can get a modular, gold class unit for some $20-$30 more than that cooler master.

+1 on this suggestion for HDD.

And the PSU should just be changed because the GX Series are overpriced and don't deliver the specced performance. That unit is more like 550W.

For something Semi-Modular and built by Seasonic, try this: ...or...
HERE

But even these are better units:
Antec HCG620
Antec Earthwatt Green 650W
Silverstone Strider 700W

If you can, unless you've already bought everything, I would suggest the H60 over the h50, the h60 was designed for LGA 1155,as I'm told, and it has a better performance. Also, switch out the stock fans on the cooler and replace them with Noctua-p12's. They will make a world of difference.

Edit: New changes -

Switching the HDD to the Spinpoint f3.
Went with the NZXT Phantom for the case
New PSU: Corsaid Builder series 600W - even though it's not modular.

One other thing, should I drop the SSD and go with the GTX 560Ti instead?
