6970 Crossfire vs GTX 580 SLI - Page 7

We've already seen 470s run with unlocked 6950's, so it stands to reason 580s when overclocked would do quite a bit better than 470s.

Oh well though, as you said the OP already went with the right choice for him.

The posts claiming AMD "lagging" in driver/CAP updates is regurgitated nonsense. I'm seeing 94-99% load in Witcher 2 with 1.3 patch @ 3560x1920. Everything topped off except ubersampling, 60-70 fps.

The only contemporary title not functioning well with AMD crossfire is Crysis 2, where typical GPU load (@ least on my setup) is 40-44%. I still get 100+ fps on single-monitor mode @ ultra + high-resolution textures, though the unoptimized 1.9 patch is absolute shat in Eyefinity. That said, Catalyst's lead driver directly stated there is a Crysis 2 fix en route & that it would "take some time". So the preceding claim of a "lack of communication" between the driver team & users is utter ignorance or a lie intent on deceiving fence-riders. Eyefinity & dual/triple/quad variants of crossfire scale brilliantly, and I've not encountered a driver issue in any current title (but for Crysis 2) that wasn't fixed within a week. Let not the facts get in the way of bias, though.

Be that as it may, GTX 580 scaling is right in line with it's competitor, so don't expect the very strong GF 110 to yield when a lens focusing on performance-exclusive data is primary consideration. Factoring in cost, though, and that you can acquire triple crossfire to dual SLI @ near equal expenditure, it's hard not to side with a triple 6970 option. Three times Cayman .. in resolutions that will actually make use of SLI/Crossfire type horsepower, simply are not competitive with dual 580s. Overclock all you want, folks, it's not even close. Lots of factors to consider, money and priority being very unique considerations per individual; nevertheless, don't let bias turn into delusion.

Sorry if you don't agree Balla. I didn't intend any of those points as opinion. If I was wrong in any of those bullet-ted points, I'll be happy to retract them and edit them out. My point was not to be biased but rather to attempt to address a few of the more flamboyantly claims presented here in this thread. Unless I'm wrong, everything I bullet-ted is a fact. I don't care what color my GPU's are and I have a hard time understanding why anyone else does either. Performance is the only "color" I care to look for.

Due to cost of 580s compared to 6970s, I believe that 3x 6970 are the way to go if your mobo has 3 PCI-E x16 slots. My mobo only has 2 slots, so 2x 580 it is for me.

My own concern was the fact that you're running x58 and talking about "bang for the buck".

It's like an inverted argument where it makes sense to you in one case, but not the other.

You also made blanket statements which does nothing but fuel the flames, AMD loses 'bang for the buck' in several of the performance tiers.

The 580 doesn't compete with the 6970, the 570 does. The 580 isn't a price vs performance card its in the "Everyone agrees the 580 is the fastest single GPU in the world." bracket.

I would have thought an x58 user would have understood that.

Honestly though... It's not just you, there is a user in here talking about "value" while running two 5870s which are slower than my 470s in DX11 in most cases while running a 980x... The logic escapes me.

Tri has increased problems over cf/sli. Tri requires more cooling, tri produces more heat. Tri has a whole list of additional costs that aren't included in that price. Most likely if you go tri you need a high end x58 board with large spacing... Or a $350 SB board. You need non reference cooling at the very least - water would be preferred. You start adding it all up and the price vs performance looks a lot different.

Most importantly, tri doesn't boost the min fps that well. Which is key in your gaming experience imo.

Edit: I'm going to bed, both cards have their ups and downs. There is no end all be all "best bang for the buck" card currently because different games have different results. If you played texture based games like F1 then yeah AMD has a strong case, however if you're playing one of the other games that favor Nvidia's superior tess or pixel fillrate then the 580 for around $450 holds its own considering the price difference from a low end $100 card to the high end AMD $350 cards isn't huge either. The best bang for the buck cards don't reside at the $300+ range.

I hope everybody here knows not every system is the same as test rigs on review sites, they use the latest driver releases, but latest isn't always greatest. I'm not trying to say any of them are wrong or biased, but if you want to know which one is faster, you have to use them on a system similar to your own. I'd trust a 6970 Crossfire vs 580 SLI between two members here before I'd ever trust a comparison from a site (as long as the members in question aren't extreme fanboys).

The OP couldn't have made a wrong choice, both are going to squash any game he throws at them.

Let me take that out of there, really was the wrong choice of words.

Fair enough point edited out. I tend to be shortsighted and forget about past generations and sometimes even the current one

Don't hate on my X58 though. Just because I blew cash on that doesn't negate the fact that I have a phenom HTPC or a 775 rig in another room. As I said I'm a fan of performance, and my time to upgrade coincided with the X58 platform rather than SB
