Galaxy GTX 470 GC Heat question

Thread Starter
Hello, I have a question about my GTX 470.

This days in my town is very warm, my room temp is around 30C and after playing a little while F.E.A.R 3 ,y GPU reached 90c, after I turned on my air conditioner the temps drop to 88-87c.

In the other seasons the temps are 4-5c lower and I dont have any problems but now I am a bit worry.

FEAR 3 uses 99% of the card trough all the game.
So my question is simple, is it safe for me to play 3-4 hours with 92-93c on my GPU ?

In idle my temps are 35-40c .

GPUs are meant to withstand that kind of heat and tend to run hotter than CPUs, since they are bigger chips.

I'd say letting your GPU run at 92-93 on load isn't good, since that's very hot. You are in the danger zone imo, and I'd try to lower your OC or even get an aftermarket VGA cooler like the Arctic Accelero Xtreme Plus (my GTX 580 is at 30c on idle and 50 on load with it).

You could also try to improve airflow in your case and even re-apply the TIM on your GPU if you want, since that should lower the temperatures a bit too. I'd recommend doing that.

I add an extra FAN and now I am getting in the 85-87c which is good enough I think

Hopefully you're running some type of OC/OV your setup, because hitting 93C with a single 470 at stock settings is *definitely* not normal unless your case airflow is *really* crap.

Anyways, under 90C is totally fine. Even 93C probably won't hurt the card, but it would make me nervous to run it that hot for hours on end.

Have you tried setting up a more aggressive fan profile via Afterburner? That should help, as the 'auto' profile is dialed in to let the card get up around 90C before it kicks up the fan in earnest.

Also ... v-sync is your friend, and on many games will cause the chip to run a LOT cooler (esp. if you have a 60Hz monitor) 'cause it locks your FPS at a maximum of your refresh rate. You may not like it on competitive FPS games as it can introduce some mouse lag, but on most games it's not a big deal.

I *always* use it cause I can't stand screen-tearing (which v-sync gets rid of) + I like the cooling effect. I also think games 'feel' better when the FPS is locked in at 60 vs. bouncing from 80 to 160 to 120, etc, like it does w/v-sync off

Yes, I got 778/1556/1700 and 1087v.

The weird thing is that when I use Kombustor my temps didn go higher than 85c but in FEAR 3 I hit 92 mark.

I'm pretty sure you won't need the memory OC cuz it takes up alot of voltage to be stable and barely improves your FPS. Just try to set memory OC to normal and lower the voltage to 1.062 or 1.075. Even with my aftermarket Gelid Icy Vision rev.2 my temps rarely go over 62*C when OCed but my OC for gaming is 750/1500/1674 at 1.050 voltage and i dare not put any higher voltage on my GPU And the difference between 750 and 778 core clock will be 25fps/750core 25.5fps/778core so it's not really worth putting that kind of voltage on your GPU.
