The only reason Halo CE is so great in your memories is nostalgia. Removing health packs, adding vehicle damage, and adding mid-range weapons all benefited multiplayer tremendously. Had Halo 2 and Halo CE been reversed, you'd be saying Halo 2 was "perfect".

Really? Oh well, I complain because there are no other effective mid/long-range weapons in the game, essentially turning every match into a pistol-fest.
Its not nostalgia seeing as i still play every day.

Sniper rifle?

I Still play Halo CE and Halo 2 on PC on a rgular basis.

The gameplay was not as good in halo 3, it was dumbed down to cater to the masses.

I still prefer the health packs. It gives you something to work for, NEEDING to find a health pack instead of just hiding behind a rock and waiting for shields to recharge.

I will agree with you on the vehicle damage though.

The main reason i prefer Halo CE over the rest is not having XBL support so it didnt go through nerfs due to the endless whining that the game is unbalanced because people suck with the pistol (which is not my go to weapon, Sniper/assault rife is my preferred combo)

The pistol is the only non-power weapon in the game that's effective at distances larger than 10m. The BR/carbine/DMR/etc. were necessary to fill in that gap. BR fights are a helluva lot more fun than constant magnum fights. Especially since Halo 1's hit detection was pretty wacky.

It was "dumbed" down to cater to the masses? Who do you think made Halo popular? Was Halo ever a niche game, a cult classic? No. Halo was popular because it appealed to "the masses". Why in the world would Bungie want to make a game that doesn't cater to what most people want? Frankly, I'm astounded whenever I see posts like this. What exactly are you implying? Who are "the masses", and why is their opinion worth less than yours?

That's fine, but most people preferred taking cover and recharging shields, instead of needing to run around gimped and weakened, trying to find a health pack so they can actually be useful in a fight.

Oh of course, because if you want your game to be balanced, you're just "whining". Strange that you attribute all this whining to people who suck with a pistol, and then profess that you don't even use it. Sniper/AR is your preferred combo? Well, what happens when you don't have a sniper? Only one person on your team can have the sniper rifle at most, so what happens to everyone else? They either run around like an idiot with CQ weapons, or use the ridiculously unbalanced pistol. Frankly, the Reach pistol was the best iteration in any of the Halo games, because it was useful and reliable, but still weaker than the precision weapons at longer distances.

Narzon, I think the reason you're disgreeing with a lot of people in this thread is because you believe in Bungie's philosophy of what a weapon sandbox should be. Bungie has always aimed for having a sandbox with different guns that are optimal at different ranges. This is why they considered the Halo CE pistol overpowered and why a lot of competitive players vehemently disagree with them. In a perfect world for Bungie, the BR would lose to the pistol at close range the majority of the time and the sniper rifle would beat the pistol at long range.

This is all fine and dandy, but seriously sucks for competitive play. What competitive play needs is a utility weapon -- a gun that gives you a chance to challenge other players right off spawn regardless of what range they're at. You shouldn't have to be scrounging around the map for a viable gun just so you can compete with the other team. Obviously, there still needs to be power weapons like the rocket launcher and the sniper rifle that can take down players with the utility weapon with relative ease since it gives teams an incentive to challenge for them and assert control over the other team, but just bending over backwards because you spawned with an assault rifle and an opposing player is spawn-trapping you with a sniper rifle (and good teams will know how to spawn-trap) is no fun at all and does nothing for competitive play. At the very least, with a utility weapon like the CE pistol, you could knock the sniper out of scope and get to cover before you get your head blown off.

The fact that the Halo CE pistol was a three-shot-kill at all ranges widened the skill gap in that game because it forced you to be good with it to be able to stand a chance against good players. Maybe getting destroyed by a player with the pistol isn't fun for the casual gamer, but if a game caters to the lowest common denominator (*cough* COD *cough*), the game loses all competitive merit.

Oh, and I see you've addressed the fact that the CE pistol serves in the BR/DMR-type role. Yeah, this might seem weird, but competitive players usually throw conventional FPS philosophy out the window if it means good competitive play. There have been some people on the MLG forums who have voiced this concern, and the general consensus for a solution is just to re-skin the pistol as a rifle. I wouldn't mind that at all.

Love the remake. Price makes me vomit. God of War 1&2 remastered in HD was only $40 and they want me to choke this down for the same price?

So your main point is that the game needs a good utility weapon at spawn so that players have a fighting chance even without power weapons? I 100% agree, and the BR fits that role perfectly. It does a much better job than a 3-shot magnum.

I don't know about that. Halo CE is regarded as the best of the franchise in terms of competition. The fact that the magnum was a three-shot-kill made missing even one shot fatal, and thus the skill gap was very wide. You're right in that in later Halo games, the BR/DMR became the go-to utility weapon, but I was speaking strictly in the Halo CE context, where the limited sandbox meant there was no BR/DMR.

Plenty of people still LAN Halo CE and if 343i was smart they would've decided to implement the MP portion of CE into the Anniversary Edition. I was saying if CE MP were to be remade in HD, then they could just re-skin the pistol as a DMR or something and problem solved.

Halo CE is actually remastered. God Of War 1 and 2 didn't offer this kind of a graphical overhaul, and it's not as popular. So they can milk this all they want.

I think Halo Anniversary is only going to be $40.
