HDD for cloning

Thread Starter
I need to run some ideas by you guys to make sure that what I want to do will work.

First, my current HDD setup is two 500GB Blacks in RAID0.

Eventually (as in soon) I want to get a Crucial M4 64GB/128GB SSD as by OS drive and for some of my most used programs. Then, I will use the two Blacks in RAID0 for everything else. For a dedicated backup, I was thinking about a 2TB drive, partitioned so that I can clone my SSD and have a backup of my RAID.

Here's where I am having trouble: First, when I get the SSD I need to move everything from the RAID drives to it. Problem is that I've already used 150GB of my drives, so cloning isn't an option. I really don't want to have to re-install everything on my SSD, but I guess that's how it has to be?

Can you partition a 2TB drive so that a backup utility can clone the SSD to the 2TB drive, while still allowing the utility to backup the RAID drives?

This is the 2TB drive I was thinking about getting. Anyone have any personal experience (ignoring the terrible reviews on Newegg)?

My last question is completely off-topic. My two RAID drives are using the only two Intel SATA3 ports on my motherboard. I do have two Marvell ports, but I'm not sure of the difference between a Marvell port and Intel port. Would it be OK to plug in my SSD into it?

Thanks!

Just backup to it. Don't futz around with fancy partition setups. It's not like you'll be able to boot off your backup drive - if anything happens to your SSD, you're going to need another SSD or HDD to run your OS off.

Yep. You need to reinstall fresh. (With your HDDs disconnected, so the boot stuff ends up on the right drive)

Then you need to apply tweaks. There's an SSD tweaking guide somewhere around here - I'm sure someone will link you.

And finally, reconnect your RAID array and adjust the boot order in the BIOS.

Yeah, but there's no point. Unless you also clone the MBR, you still won't be able to boot off it.

I've got a few. I made the mistake of ordering them off Newegg rather than NCIX. See, I'm in Canada, and Newegg shipped them via UPS. Up here UPS likes to drop-kick packages to your door. Sometimes boxes don't even arrive with 6 sides.

Anyway, all the HDDs I ordered off Newegg died within a few months. (Slow deaths, so I didn't lose any data) All the WD Greens I bought off NCIX (or got via RMA) are still working.

If you're ordering off Newegg, and the distribution center is near you, it may be a good idea to order from Newegg. But if not, you've been warned. Newegg's packaging isn't adequate for long distance shipping.

I gather the Marvell controller isn't that fast. It's not recommended for SSDs. It would probably be fine for a HDD RAID array, though.
