5.1 Surround sound in games using SPDIF Optical (software AC3 encoding)?

Thread Starter
Since my soundcard can only decode DTS/AC3, surely there is a few programs to encode dolby digital from PC Games and pass it through the SPDIF? o.0

Otherwise i would need to buy another cheap soundcard that supports Dolby Digital Live (DDL) on-the-fly encoding.

i have suffered with this problem for a long time. your best bet is to get a new sound card. not saying there isnt a convertor out there since the last time ive looked into it. but it might be an easy solution that helps your gaming performance instead of putting more burden on your cpu and taking away from the gaming performance

One of these FREE programs may helps you.

some can decode and some can encode. They take a short amount of time to pour through all of the options but they DO work.

have you actually used any of those programs to convert the DDL info from the games and pass it through the digital line in order to get dolby digital or dts sound from the games itself ?

I actually did so with a USB sound card/DAC that has stereo analog outputs, but the card has optical in/out. so I converted the sound with those filters.

would you mind writing a faq on how you did that. it would be interesting to see how you were able to get the sound to use the passthrough and keep its proper channles

No. Writing such a thing invites some (not necessaily you) to feel that I am the one supporting the product.

People then want you to "mystically" account for every possible configuration and alteration that they have. Again, this is not you, but anytime I have done something similar for free, people counter with hypothetical "Well how about this? How about Blu-Ray with no downsampling?" etc. I do not have that kind of time in my day.

i think you would be suprised as the results of this forum when you post a faq for the community.

but i understand. personally i have never found a successful configuartion that would pass through each channle unchanged in order to keep the surround sound accurate for the gaming environment
