USB Headset Suggestions

Thread Starter
I'm searching for a new USB headset and just wanted to get your opinion on if this logitech is good at this sale price.

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16826104281

Everything seems ok with it, but I know there's a lot of audiophiles on here that may have better suggestions that I could of missed. Or if this looks good I'll go ahead and get it, any suggestions are appreciated. Thanks!

as far as USB headsets go, it is great. the hardware build is solid and it really does isolate sound.

of course I am no audiophile, but for gaming w/ chat, it does the job well.

Most, if not all audiophiles will tell you to keep away from USB headsets as they bypass the soundcard for their own bult-in card (this is often why the usb stick is so big on most usb headsets)

I can see their benefit however. They come in handy for use on other systems - especially if those systems have poor soundcards. So taking a pair round a friends, etc, Provided that there's no compatibility issues.

Your choice, though.

for some people, USB might just be a better fit.

Your phrasing is slightly odd.

If you mean non-USB headsets "provide better sound (assuming you have a half-decent sound card)..." I agree. USB headsets will rarely sound better than regular comparable headphones designed to work with your PC's sound card.

Unless you are running on a computer built before 2005, modern on-board audio will sound better than USB. Unless you manage to find some super expensive USB DAC.

The problem with most USB headsets is their internal sound card are often god-awful in terms of sound quality. The few I've tried sound like listening through a tin can.

Also, if you ever do decide to upgrade your sound card (even to something that costs <$50), you won't be able to take advantage of it with USB headphones, since they obviously bypass your sound card.

agreed on all points, but since the OP has given no sig rig, all we can go on is what he asked... what is the best USB headset?

rather than turning this into the 100th "USB headsets suck" thread, I thought it more productive to give my opinion to the OP on his actual question.

True, but he did ask for "better suggestions"

Just trying to help inform, in case he is unaware of USB headphones' poor performance.

For $100... No
For the same price you can get a decent art of headphones, clip on mic (no diff from headset mics), and even a decent sound card. Why:
Better sound quality
More flexibility/expandability option (ie sound card)
Less trouble in is setting up headset and drivers so they work.

You could try my setup:
Audio technica ath-m30
Asus xonar dg with headphone amp
Zalman ip on mic

Better setup for ~<$80
