Windows activation screwing me over.

Thread Starter
Every time I change hardware, even something as little as graphics cards they make me activate windows again. So finally they locked my key. It also just so happens to be the weekend so their customer service department that fixes this is closed.

Is there any way around this? I am so angry I would probably kill Bill Gates if he was standing in front of me. I paid a lot for this software and they can decide when to revoke my license at any time, just because I switch my godamn graphics cards?

I don't know of any legit workarounds, but I do recommend avoiding the Windows Update "KB971033":

Quote:
Update for Windows 7 for x64-based Systems (KB971033)

Download size: 1.2 MB

Update type: Important

This update to Windows Activation Technologies detects activation exploits and tampering to key Windows system files. These exploits try to bypass regular Windows activation and are sometimes included within counterfeit copies of Windows.
I know this doesn't help right now, but it should in the future.

there is a Window activation removal tool online on torrent sites, if you bought your W7 retail, then just call them on monday, if you bought you key off ebay legaly or if you (God forbid) pirated it, then use this tool.

I used it on my retail x64 ultimate, it works well

No this is a legit retail copy, that's why I'm so mad. If I stole it I wouldn't be mad.

I want it to stop though, I'm so sick of activating windows every time I change hardware. It's ridiculous.

Maybe I should finally just look into Linux.

I have a legit copy, but yet I still avoid that update. The reason why I avoid it is because I don't want to be dealing with the same problem that Segovax is dealing with.

Again, just always avoid that Windows Update that I showed to you. If you avoid it, then you won't have this problem anymore. For now, try uninstalling that specific update.

Well I removed that update, thanks for the tip. After I get it activated again hopefully this will stop it from locking up my Windows.

If it doesn't solve it, then I must admit that I won't be surprised. A year ago, I had an update kill Crysis 1. Seriously: I installed the 1 update that was available, rebooted, tried to open Crysis, but it wouldn't. I uninstalled the update, rebooted, but Crysis 1 still wouldn't open.

Fortunately, I had some free time on my hands. So I formatted, started over, set everything back up to completion and avoided that update. Sure enough, Crysis worked just fine. So I decided to see what would happen if I decided to install this update: yeah, you guessed it: it killed Crysis 1 for me again.

So I formatted, started over, and I've been avoiding the update until very, very recently. For some reason, it doesn't kill it anymore. However, the whole point is that Crysis 1 was still not opening after I uninstalled the offending update.

this is what you are SUPPOSED to do, before you change any big hardware, you temporarily deactivate windows with this command line [slmgr.vbs -upk] then reactivate with the same command line, but use [-ilc] instead. for a full list of command options with slmgr.vbs type in [slmgr.vbs /?] use these commands as an administrator (run as administrator) using Command Prompt.
