Give out my service tag number?

Thread Starter
I am trying to sell a laptop on craigslist. I listed the complete specs and model number. Some one asked me if they could have the service tag number. (Its a dell) I am wondering if I should give it out? Is it a unique number only assigned to my laptop or is it the same number on all models? I do not want to get scammed.

Just ignore the guy I guess. IMO, you don't need to know the service tag when buying a laptop. You don't see Dell provide that info. Also, I don't think the guy is interested in buying it from you cause I have had the same experience on craigslist.

If it sounds like an odd request, I'd be suspicious.

Nah, it's likely he'll contact them and try and get replacment parts for free, under your name.

He doesn't need to know that before he buys it, so don't give it to him.

Just explain that the service tag is legit, and you can prove it (either screenshot+blacked out or in person).

If it's a serious buyer he/she'll be able to at least meet up with you, for you to prove it.
Go to a starbucks or something with him/her and show 'em it's still valid.
