570 SLI Problems. PSU issue?

Thread Starter
Alright I just recently got my hands on another GTX 570 for my build and had problems right from the start. Long story short I tested both cards separately and the worked great while the case was laying down (Big ass case) so I popped them back in together moved the sli bridge to the second "post" and got brand new drivers. Worked great! No freezing, great benchmark scores, and proof that both cards were working great together via EVGA presion tool. The next day I tipped the case back up and slid it back into the corner where it belongs while it was running BAM it froze again. Restarted and it worked great for about 15 min then BAM it froze BUT I still could use the mouse but wasn’t able to click anything (did the restart dance a few times and I got *Display driver has stopped working or some stuff about half the time*). Restarted again and the same thing happened. So I called my buddy and he said I either have a short or a grounding problem because the pc worked when it was on it's side (as far as i could remember after I fixed the driver problem). So I checked the connections, moved some cables around, and checked the mobo connectors. The PC worked great for quite awhile; ran Heaven, Metro 2033 Benchy, Furmark 1.7, and Stalker Clear sky without any problems. As soon as I went to launch Crysis BAM screen went black and the fan speeds dropped to nothing and I had to restart.

The next day I called EVGA and told them the issue and he said I'm pushing my PSU to hard and I should get at least a 1kw for the 2 570's. We did the math on the power draw and it came out to right around 850w so it SHOULD work but it’s not recommended he said.

After I got off the phone with EVGA I called Corsair and told the guy my problem with the 2 cards. He said both cards can draw up to 365w ea then I add cpu, ram, HDD, Fans etc and then I’m over 850w (I'm not sure of the EXACT numbers but they were very close)

So both companies said I have a inadequate PSU and the numbers don’t lie unless they are wrong to begin with but no one can give me a exact power draw. But before I even bought the second card I searched around and came up with people saying 850w is plenty of power for 2 cards even with OC'ing them.

Like these 2 people:

http://www.overclock.net/nvidia/8957...-sli-850w.html
http://www.overclock.net/nvidia/940955-570-sli.html

My Main concern is I don’t want to go dump $230 on a nice 1kw psu and it not be the problem then I’m stuck with another psu and the same freezing problem and then I REALLY don’t know what’s wrong.

Any help would be appreciated and all my parts are in my sig PLUS 3 fans if that helps any. Plus I have no problem running the cards separately. Thanks.

Have you tried installing the 266.58 drivers and see if you continue to get the problems?
You never know driver might be the problem, report back and let us know.

Alrighty! I installed the drivers that you told me to and it seems to be fine. I went ahead and played Clear Sky for a bit and it worked pretty good (I only say pretty good because it still runs pretty bad for having 2 GPU's) I will go ahead and test a few more games just to be sure. The main reason I just didn’t go off and buy a new psu is because it was freezing during loading and simple tasks like playing music and opening up folders. That doesn’t put much stress on much of anything compared to gaming and benchmarking. But why do the older drivers work and the new ones don't? How did you know what drivers I should install in the first place?

Edit: Was playing Witcher 2 and BAM crashed, fans pulsed, PC restarted.

I have done a review of the most current drivers and am quite aware of some of the problems that some are facing with these drivers, however that said it hasn't really fixed your problem. As obsidian said it could be the actual PSU, mobo or even RAM.

Is your system overclocked, including your gpu's?

If not and if everything is on stock, try each of the cards one by one and see if you continue to get the problem. If it's not the GPU's then try running memtest for a few hours. If the Memtest passes with no errors then it just leaves the mobo and PSU.

Yes the top card is the superclocked card from EVGA I've had from day one when they first came out. I did downclock it to the second cards speed and it did freeze just like all the other times.

I did test both cards separately and they worked great.

I'll run memtest tomorrow after I take out the second card so I don't keep crashing my system. I also have another 4gb of ram coming sometime next week that is identical to the stuff I have in my system now.

On a side note I just restarted my pc after the crash during the game and watched a movie in the living room. When I got back in my room my pc was unresponsive and I had to force shutdown via the power button on the front of the case. So it crashed during idle? ALSO the PSU is kind of old. I got it for my core2duo and my GTX 260sc back in the day. I still have the receipt somewhere. If you want I can make an attempt to find it to give you an idea on the age of the PSU (I believe they degrade over time but not positive).

Second side note: How do I check to see if the MOBO is bad? Any tests that I could do for that?

Is your cpu overclocked? If it is try running it stock to see if that's the problem. If not and you say both cards work fine seperatly, then it could more than likely be the PSU on its way out.

You can check the PSU by using a multi meter, try googling "how to check PSU with multi meter" or something lol and you should find something, alternatively check on here.

If you say that the gpu's work seperatly then the mobo sounds fine. By the way what method did you use to check the gpu's seperatly? Did you run a gpu stability tester or something?

Anyways let us know the outcome of the memtest, make sure you run it for a few good hours.

[EDIT] No my cpu is at stock speeds.

Alright, I've run memtest like you said (I used an old flash drive/thumb drive bootable version) It did about 3 passes with 0 errors.

As far as testing the cards separately I used furmark 1.7, Heaven, and various games like Metro, STALKER, Witcher 2 etc etc.

As far as an update I took the second card out and packed it back in the box it came with and put it in the closet for now. For the last 2 days I've been using the SC card and I haven't had 1 freeze up or random shut down. So with that being said I believe that it really is a PSU issue that is causing all these problems (unless you have any more ideas on what I should do).

Now I'm starting to doubt that I even need 2 cards RIGHT NOW. I'm not really sure if I should sli right now given the fact that the games I'm playing right now don’t need it. (But then why do people have 2 GTX 590's with 1 monitor......)

Anyways thank you for all your help!!!!!!!!
