GTx 580 Vs 2x gtx 460's in SLI

Thread Starter
Hello there!
I was just curious if anybody had any opinions on whether I should add another GTX 460 to my rig making it 2 gtx 460's in SLI. Or if I should sell my current 460 and upgrade to a new gtx 580. Ill post some pics of my rig later. I know that ill be able to run most games with maxed out settings with 2 460's but would it be better to get one 580 now and then another one down the road when the games demand it, or buy two 460's now and when they get outdated buy whatever is new. I feel like im just rambling in this thread lol. Any opinions will be much appreciated. thanks!

I don't think it makes financial sense to go sli unless you are buying 2 new top end cards to last a while or for benching.

The 460 is still worth a bit of cash so I'd sell it and upgrade if it's similar price and performance once taking into account the money you'll get for the 460.

In one more generations time the 460 will be worth very little compared to what it's worth now.

GTX460's scale very well.Id grab another GTX460.It will be cheaper with about the same performance with the edge going to the dual GTX460

GTX460 is worth about $120(used) and a GTX580(new) is $475 or better so he still needs $375 or more.

that would depend on how much you have to spend. from what i know (correct me if im wrong) 460s in SLI perform at about the same level as a 580. it would way cheaper if you got a second 460 over a single 580. but the decision is entirely up to you. is your monitor 1080p? if its a larger monitor with a 2650x1600 resolution you would benefit more from a GTX 580 due to it have more available VRAM.

You will see similar performance between the two cards. It comes down to the resolution on your 27" monitor. (edit - you posted x1200 as I was typing this response! go GTX580!!)

It comes down to the $ for the most part. I am not 100% sure on gtx460 resale at the moment, but down the road trying to sell two 460's will be a bit more difficult than selling one gtx580.

I just "sidegraded" from 2xHD6870's in crossfire (similar or better performance than the gtx580 in most games) because I like a better one GPU solution. Heat/drivers with 2 cards can be hit or miss depending on what game you play or case you have.

I would say sell the 460 and swoop a used ASUS or MSI (warranty is s/n based, so you are good to go) non-ref card from these forums =)

if you could tolerate the power consumption GTX 480s 1.5GB of VRAM and can be found for relatively cheap and are still VERY powerful cards. check out some reviews. it depends on how much you can get for your 460 and how much you want to spend.

I love my SLI 460's and right now you can get some really good deals on them with EVGAs Blowout Deals.

Obviously, 2 GTX 460's is a lot cheaper than a 580 but they do start to loose some performance due to limited Vram if you game above 1080p. You may want to check these benchmarks out. http://www.hardocp.com/article/2010/..._460_1gb_sli/1

Basically if you are on a budget and only game at 1080p I would recommend SLI 460s, but if money is less important to you or you want to go above 1080p I'd go with a 580.

PS. I see you have an EVGA gtx 460 SC. I actually have one SC and one SSC SLI together and the SC has no problem over clocking up to SSC levels. You also want to OC the memory on both card even higher than the SSC standard.

GTX460 is worth about $120(used) and a GTX580(new) is $475 or better so he still needs $375 or more.
This

The 580 is a lot more cash for about the same performance? If you just really want to spend the money then go for it. But you can grab a 460 for like 120 bucks. Is 1900x1200 that big of a difference then 1080p?

Because sli 460's should handle 1080p just fine.
