Newbie Overclocking Question - GTX 460

Thread Starter
I just bought a GTX 460 for my first computer build. I heard this card overclocks well. However, do I need to have some third party, powerful cooler for it to overclock safely? Is it possible to overclock with the stock fan/heatsink on the card?

Yes. Stock cooler is ok, but it might limit how high you take your overclock if your card can do it.

For best results and temps. Watercool it.

Thanks. What should the idle temperature and gaming temperature be? Any general guidelines?

It should overclock fairly well on stock cooling.

Yes it does just fine I over clocked mine and its just fine just make sure you get EVGA Precision so you can edit the fan speeds at certain temps. The best idle temp is under 35c and my load temp is around 62c with 60% fan speed and my ambient temps are around 81F

Does EVGA Precision have voltage options? If not, use MSI Afterburner so you can change your voltages and get a higher overclock. You shouldn't really be limited by heat unless you live in an oven, 460s are cool cards.

EDIT: Doesn't look like Precision has voltage control. Afterburner for sure.

I use MSI Afterburner for my GTX 460 and it works great. You can unlock the voltage and take it up to 1.087v safely before the card limits you.

You should be able to take the card up to 800mhz core on stock voltage. Then from there I'd bump it by 20mhz intervals, stress it with OCCT or another program and keep going. Bump the voltage as necessary, etc.
