Is now the time to jump to i5?

Thread Starter
Hey guys,

Currently, I'm looking at upgrading to i5. My trusty old Q9550 is quickly falling behind the times, and I think its time for an upgrade. As of right now the Q9550 and UD3P have a decent resale value on eBay, so (roughly half) of the cost of the upgrade will be covered. I would like to upgrade sooner than later, while my current mobo/CPU have some decent resale value. What do you guys think? Should I hold off till Ivy, or should I upgrade now? Thanks for your input.

It's really not worth the hassle. You have an excellent chip. Have you tried overclocking yet if you dislike performance?

Unless you change out your graphics card, you shouldn't see a major improvement anyway.

Coming from a 775->1156 user.. I would say wait or buy a cheap SB rig if you must upgrade. There isnt much to be gained going from 775->1156 ..775->1336 is a little different, but you at least already have a good Q4..so the differences wouldnt be that drastic.

*Dont get scammed into the epeen game.. your rig kicks AS5! Upgrade, when an 'upgrade' is actually worth it.

I would wait for Ivy.. Sandy isnt worth it right now.

Wait till pci-e 3.0 an sata 3.1 become more main stream then pick then go ivy. or wait for ivy. The power footprint should be lot lower then old 775 pin and high fps.

I came from a 4.2ghz Q9550 E0 daily runner, and this i7 2600k is totally leet. I love it. Runs nice and cool, unlike my Q9550. I can now run at 4ghz on my 2600k at less temps, still besting my old Q9550 scores/benches.

Here's what I say, buy what you think you need to buy. I bought mine for multiple reasons when I bought mine. Some of those reasons have changed since I bought it.

My reasons where:

F@H
Gaming
Temps
Futureproofing (I go through hardware rather quick, makes for easier upgrades)

Now I hate to say it, I don't really run F@H much anymore........my electric bills are getting rather high in the summer. I just might take a month or two off from F@H.

Sell your stuff now while it's still worth something! While I have not notice much of a performance increase going from a Q9550 to a 2500k, the extra features of the newer motherboards are worth the upgrade alone. Also, if you get a CPU/MOBO combo from Microcenter the total upgrade to a i5-2500k, Z68 chipset mobo, and 8GB will probably cost you nothing after selling your current parts!

I was able to get my i5-2500k for $180, the mobo was (Gigabyte z68 MATX) $75 after the combo deal with cpu from Microcenter, and the 8GB of ram was $50 online!

Sell the chip on ebay for ~200-250. I sold mine for $160 + a HD 4670 2 weeks ago as i got my 2500k+z68 for $350 =). The upgrade didnt cost me that much as all as i used the same case, psu, video card etc.

Q9550 was sweet, but 2500k is crazy good, games are smoother and everything works much faster.
