Need help diagnosing laptop display issue, black glowing screen

The laptop is an Acer Aspire 5517-5997, model KAWG0.

After a random time being on (between 1 minute and 2 hours, regardless of temperature or what programs are running) the screen goes blank.

The blank screen glows a bit, and the +/- brightness keys do adjust the level of glow.

There is nothing visible on the screen once this happens, not even faintly.

Every once in a while, a horizontal white bar will flash across the blank screen, not always in the same place and not always the same thickness. This does not happen when the display is working, before it goes blank.

With an external monitor connected to the VGA port, the external monitor works before and after the LCD goes blank.

I updated the BIOS and display drivers earlier today, but it still happens. Both were downloaded from the manufacturer's website.

I'm thinking its either the screen, the cable, or maybe even the motherboard. Has anybody run into this before?

Yes, Acer is very low quality, that's why they are cheap. If you still have warranty, send it in. If you are tech literate, take it apart and see what it is. You do have the right idea though, could be screen, or cable. I doubt it could be the motherboard as you say the VGA port works on external monitors, but don't take my word for it.

Thanks for the reply. I guess I'll take it apart, and when I put it back together I can add the leftover screws to the collection redface.gif

Do you always have leftover unnecessary screws?
if so you might want to re think tearing it apart just throwing it out there...thumb.gif
